He put up his show in Sweden in the 70's and he had some arguments with the promoter. One was he needed a container behind the bleechbox for more thrust, but the container blew over by the jet from his engine... I remembered sitting on the grandstand trying to get a picture with my Instamatic, didn't work. I saw him after his run and he had bruises after the saftey belts as they wasn't thightend up enough,

The ending portion on the Steve Miller song was from the album "Sound Of The Drags". Probably recorded in '61, because I had the album in '62 I believe. The album had recordings of rails, gassers and super stocks making passes. I must have thought it was awesome because I wore the record out from playing it so many times.

I just purchased the final Lions trilogy DVD series, wherein there is a slow motion home movie taken of the Garlits explosion. Filmed from the stands you see the car leave the line against Bob Creitz and bammo, the car seperates and the roll cage plops forward. You then see track personnel run to his aid and that of the injured fan in the front row. Filiming continues as Mickey Thompson tries to conceal the severed foot from Garlits observation. From a drag racing standpoint, its quite historical as with the car seperating, it marks the beginning of the end for the FED

Nice model car collection. If I only knew then what I had. Several of those mounted on the wall once graced my room, albeit in a completed fashion. My favorite being the AMT 3 in 1 Dragster/Altered kit. There were enough pieces so that you could build a twin engined dragster and a Fiat altered. The Revell series of gassers, Skippers Critter and Simple Simon Thames panel tying for second apiece.

  10. Mazooma, It looks like a dual engine rail on the cover of "Big Sounds"...
Is this possibly Lefty?, I can't make it out.

By the way, NICE garage art !!!

As a kid I had a bunch of those albums I wore the grooves off of also. Back then you didn't have your own stereo
so everything was played full blast on the family stereo in the livingroom. Boy my parents put up with a lot!!

I picked up this CD a few years ago - It's 36 tracks of nitro cars with background tower announcements
and commentary. It will blow you out of your car!!

There is a reason that the Nitronic Research CD is so good. Cole Coonce is one of the best sound men in the industry. He is also a huge drag racing fan.

Next shot is of him racing the "king" of AA/GS K.S. Pittman in 1968

Racing his Wild Bunch steel 40 Willys at Maple Grove in the 1980's

The photos dont do justice to the beauty of the paint job. I saw the car once at Irwindale and the paint hues were really deep and rich. I am thinking a painter named "Corky" from Oklahoma applied it.

One pass and it went skyward, the landing resulted in bending the front axle. It was a fun 1st pass...! This car is pretty much a duplicate of K.S.'s 67 car. That one was the first to run in the 8's and we plan on running high 8's with her when she's shaken down.
