Pretty sure it's Blair Shepard in the old Scorcher after he sprayed it black, on his only trip down to Sydney International Dragway at Castlereagh judging by the bush and gumtrees in the background. If memory serves me correctly he also cleaned up on that outing and took the big trophy home for that years nationals.

Wanless had his car fitted up with the highchair so he could see over the blower, he also had that pink candy cane paintjob so it's definitely not him.

Peter Dykes only drove the ex Leland Kolb ex Beebe & Mulligan car still with the Fighting Irish paint scheme at that particular point in time. I think he did make a few passes in the Scorcher a little later on in time but only up at Surfers Paradise.

Great pics Rich!!!! the pics of the dragsters from 61-64... The 3rd row down first on the left is Jack Kulps 62 gas car that he built from the ground up himself. That car was very sucessful and he later morved into nitro. His son is looking for any pics of any of his cars... There is another car that George Van crashed that he still has the mangled chassis and some body panels from but no pics.

I remember being at Cecil back around 1970 when the announcer said this about Joe Jacono. "Joe's dream is to be walking in the pits with Keith Black and Ed Pink and hearing someone ask "who are those guys with Joe?""

Wanless or Dykes? Neither it is Blair Shepherd in the Frank Hussar RCS 175 inch wheel base chassie that was built for the late Leland Kolb , sold to Ash Marshall and crashed at Calder raceway soon after it arrived in Australia. During the repair it was stretched to 186 inch wheel base, Marshall sold it to Shepherd an Australian Speedcar champion who ran a couple of Offy Midgets with great success. Shepherd won the 1969 Nationals at Castlereagh and the car passed through a series of owners and was at the cacklefest at the CHHR at Bakersfield this year.

Well.....I was in the US Army Basic Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia. Friday evening of the long Labor Day weekend I left base (AWOL) and flew to Indy. My car was at home in Va. Fred had taken nearly everything off my car for "spares" and by the time I got there late Friday, half of my car was on His car!! He wanted me to drive so I did. He thought that we did so well the previous year (1963 D/G Runner-up...he was my crew chief) that we might be able to do it again. His car was one of the 3 quickest cars there (Virgil Cates and Ron Hassel were the other two). Anyway, we felt like, with a little luck we might be able to make the Class Final again....that is until his hired driver went RED!!!!! Oh well!!!

I hope the statute of limitations has run out!!!

Back in July 1966 I was in the Army and came home for the weekend. The local car club, Colonial Rodders, went over to Capital and took the club's injected Flathead rail. Bobby Hopkins, brother Sherman and cousin Bill Eason took Bobby's Bantum Altered powered by a 327 with a pair of AFB's.

There was another car of which I have not photo that was, I think, a 1940 Ford with a Hilborn injected Flathead running in H/G. I can still remember the run in which the car was paired up with Gene Altizer's Anglia. The Ford had a hell of a handicap start and sputtered off the line with fouled plugs. Gene must have idled off the line as he stalled the Anglia. He backed up, restaged, waited for the full tree and left again blowing by the still sputtering Flatty just before the lights.

  27. Those are great shots from what looks like the 1961 or '62 US Nationals. I can ID the white T roadster as Jess VanDeventer from CA; The Dragmaster TwoThing; Walts Puffer Two roadster; Sam Pariott's City of Industry modified sports; the '32 3 window running the Willys is Jim Davis? from the DC area; Jack Chrisman in the Howard Cams Twin Bear; Dave Strickler in the Old Reliable Chevy; and of course Ivo's Showboat.

That looks like Eddie Hill. His twin-Pontiac rail, that is.

The Ramchargers ran a Dart in those days--could be them in the far lane against Strickler.
