Rare shot of Gary Cagle piecing together the motor from his wrecked old school fuel roadster into what was to have been his planned attack on the local top fuel circuit with a state of the art rail. In top fuel form, the dragster featured a nice tail section with a trap door that enclosed the chute.

Al Vander Woude was the consumate back yard guy. In some instances he built his own chassis'. He was a staple of the match race wars for years, yet received not enough ink in my estimation, depsite some beautiful, unquie looking cars that could occassionally run the numbers

I heard that the rear fenders on that car was cut with a circular saw.

  16. Yep, the one thing Maz ever did that wasn't up to his usual standards.

  20. That's an awsome shot of the Bressette & Hammer car! There's a lot of detail there that you never get to see. The Cirello mag & weedburners jump out for me.

I know it's a little new but what a cool picture and Eddie Hill walked away from it.

That happened during qualifying at Pomona back before you could change cars during an event without having to re qualify. Darrell Gwynn loaned the Hills a frame/body package and they put a new car together in time to make the final day of qualifying.
Eddie had a "white" board in the trailer where they listed anything that they borrowed or loaned during an event, just to keep track of stuff. At that race the top item on the list was "Gwynn--complete car".
Eddie has another catastrophic episode at Sonoma a few years later when the entire rear section of the chassis tore off when he pulled the chutes and it was following that deal that the NHRA changed the rules to allow teams to change rollers without having to re qualify. That rule both helped and hurt Scelzi at Topeka in 1999 but that is a whole 'nother story.

He didn't win that race, right before the first round they found a 4" long crack on the side of the block so they just started the car, and staged it incase if Darrell Gwynn redlighted, crossed the center line, or other infraction that would have gotten him disqualified, Darrell made a clean run, and Eddie just idled the car down track afterwards, alot of work just to lose in the first round.
