The last batch of little photos posted by Spoons in the upper left is a Willys gasser...I don't think Lefty ever drove one of those...

Nope, not Lefty. Thats the Rollema-Hill dragster.
I know because I took that photo in 1962 when I was 11 at LIONS Drag Strip.

here's more from that from the same afternoon...

Thanks, Kev. If it wasn't for wanting to take photos at the drags, I would have never become a professional photographer for the next 40 years.
I my wildest dreams, I didn't think that I would ever find anyone who wanted to see my old photos and movies...what a world !!

    Are you kidding?

    They are great, man.

I stared at those pics for quite a while, not knowing anything about them...

Doug, that photo looks like something that LIFE magazine would have used in a feature on dragsters c1962--it's that good.

"Here we see the determined look of today's dragster pilot. In just a few seconds he will drive his customized racing machine to a speed approaching 200 miles per hour and then hop out for a hot dog and a Coke. At any moment his car could go out of control or burst into a flaming 200 mph funeral pyre yet he is as calm and cool as if he were driving home from work in his weekday sedan."

I'll second that. We all right-click/save on the good photos but at least give the original poster credit. Use the "QUOTE" function if you want to acknowledge/re-post a cool photo.

HRM photos from the 1958 world standing kilometer record attempts made at March AFB in Riverside, CA. Calvin Rice's and Ed Cortopassi's cars made runs on the long runway normally used by March's B-52s and KC-135s. Note how undeveloped the area was in the late 50s.

In the photo below you can see the area in the distance where Riverside Raceway was located.

I'll tell you what, I'll quit posting....
These pics I got came from a friend of mine who has been a track announcer locally since 61'. I obviously am not sure of their origin and would not "Pirate" anything from anybody. I sure as hell am not going to go thru all the dam posts to see what's been posted or not!!
He gave them to me and told me to "Enjoy". I thought I'd share them all with you guys, but somebody is always bitchin' about something around here.
I have over 1,000 photo's, slides, etc. that I'd like to share but It may not be worth the effort....

spoons, please post the pictures you have (I for one would like to see them), there will always be "town cryers", just don't pay attention to them, and do your own thing, that's what I do.

  19. Spoons,

Don't stop posting pictures, the pictures are awesome. If there are some perceived duplicates, so what?? I enjoy seeing them more than once. It's not like your saying you took them or trying to make a profit off of them...

I recall when you first started posting them that someone gave them to you.

I was seconding what Doug said in his above post. LOTS of photo re-posts in this thread but yeah, they're all good, even the second or third time around. Peace.

Spoons: You really should go through this entire thread--there are 100s of killer photos. It's worth the two hours!
