That is the fire extinguishing system. Probably just a nozzle that sprays the driver. Safety back then was not a well thought out thing like it is today. My dad, same guy pictured learned this the hard way in 1973. When the car caught fire and burned him up pretty bad on his lower body. It ended his nitro fuel carreer.

I have never asked but when the picture was taken my dad had already moved to K.C. and set up camp with Al. During this time Al did not have a car by my time thinking. They maybe were tag teaming the Sour Grapes, The old Dutchman Charger rebodied to the cuda, by the looks of the billion mile dodge's location.

This brings me to this part of the story. This is the Flying Dutchman Funny car that burned up his lower body. This is my favorite picture, and unfortunately a low resolution at that. besause it has my dads name on the car in the driver logo possition. And the 2nd one does also, it was a handout sticker the gave at the track. I still have the sticker but it has seen better days. Yes it was originally orange, but the car is fading off of it fast.

This is a good time to bang out the Maverick pictures. This is the Charger 3 chassis rebodied to the maverick. The body before paint, stenciled spray can lettering. This is the point where Al went from using Dodge bodies to Ford bodies.

The way men stare at gals in bikinis has not changed much, But the bikini itself sure has. Check the gazers in the background out.

This is the last drag car my dad ever owned. I took this at a strip in MO. Somewhere. He still to this day runs a dirt late model and a modified. The late model is kenny wallaces old car that Tony Stewart use to drive.
