With the high speeds and open top carbs it created a suction and siphoned the fuel up and out of them at high speed. This cover created a low pressure 'still' air (Sort of) area where that wouldn't happen.
The carbs are made to suck down ambient air, so one theory was that you also got better induction from this as the ram air effect impaired the 97s, not sure how true that is though?
And last, they lessened the chance of ingesting something and lunching the motor.
I'm sure there is someone out there that knows more about it though.
    Hope that helps,
    Doc.

Here is a very rare look at a cartoon drawing of Al Vanderwoude. It is my understanging that it was to be used in a magazine story, but not 100% sure. I dont know how one of the proof copies ended up in my dads stuff, but it did.

Also the 2nd pic has the artists signiture, does anyone recognize the name?

The pic has a very good liking to Al for sure.

Also there was a quiz posted a couple hundred pages back asking for identification of several people standing in a drivers meeting at the starting line, I think at Lions. Can anyone remember what page that was?

This picture was taken at Vaca Valley Drag Strip in 1958. yeah that is Woody Gilmore in the seat, but it is not his car. It is Paul Sutherland's car. Behind it is the Top Banana of Hank Vincent and George Santos( S & S Automotive)

  11. In Australia, I think the first rule books said you had to run a shield over the carbys in case of backfire and flame back in the drivers face. I think it was only open cars like altereds and dragsters without a windshield.

doesn't look like Lions. The bleachers on the left weren't that long and theres no lettering on the sign boards...

I made it to pg.605 in 5 days a few hrs. ea night and I gotta say," This IS The Pictorial History of Drag Racing!" What Ive learned.
I didnt know there were So many multi engined cars/rails built.
    The creativity,ingenuity,craftsmanship,engineering were/are Outstanding!
The comments from everyone were very helpful esp. from the guys who were there or IN the Drivers seat ie: photo of 4 dragsters abreast and someone wrote in-ya,I was Driving the 2nd from top! That makes the photo So much more for me.
Dont throw any photo away (Ive still got mine from ,64/5)
This thread will go on as long as Old Photos are still being found in dumpsters, attics, trunks, file cabinets or as, the guy I met last wk. who was the Crew Chief for a Well known East Coast A/FC who said, "Ive got 7 boxes of stuff Ive saved over the yrs. I didnt throw nothin away!"
THX Royalshifter & Everyone who Posted!!! Now its my turn.
