One of the owners of this car was a neighbor of mine. The car started as a blown Fiat altered on gas. They swapped the Fiat for the Mustang shell, and replaced the gas for fuel and viola...instant funny car. It had a 427 Ford Wedge in it. They raced it until early 1969 when it was sold to a racer in Australia, where it crashed shortly afterword

The car was written off at Melbourne's Calder Park when it was driven be Alan Walton, Calder had a really short braking area or should that be breaking area where a number of cars were lost to the sport. Alan still has the origonal fire suit that came with the car it has the origonal partners names embroided on the back. I am sorry I can't remember their names, the car was called PSYCHO. It was powered by a blown 392 Hemi. Was one of the partners named Andrews?

The original owners were (Jason?) Snodgrass and Pat Mahnken.
IIRC it had the blown 427 Ford FE w. direct drive all the time it was raced in the states.

I am pretty certain that it was Bill Pound that brought the Snodgrass and Mahnken car to Oz. It had a 392 in it when it ran here and was re-named Brain Damage. It was always a bit short. tall and narrow to be competitive even down under.

Handlers 50th at Bremerton, WA this weekend. Just a great event with historic machinery, several former Top Fuel world champs and big names from the region, and perfect weather. The only bummer was the silver Willys crashing on the top end during the wheels up run here... extensive damage on it's last run, but the driver was okay.

Dog- your picture files are the BOMB!!! Do you know who the driver of Smokey Red was? I wonder if it was (or became) Richard Schroder's green Bad Bossa Nova. I've never found any photos of it online. He put on a hell of a show.

The right side was torn up because it tipped onto the side once while spinning. It didn't roll over though. The guy had just 2 runs on that engine. And I agree, it was (is?) a beautiful car.

Mahnken was my neighbor. Denny Andrews was the driver. He also built the chassis

Rooman you are right Bill Pound imported it to Australia ,I think he sold it to someone else before Alan Walton purchased it. After Alan crashed it he fitted the mechanicals into the ex Santo Rapasarida Holden Torana Funny Car which Alan called "Smokin".

Oops I forgot to mention that I found some info on the Ed Pink FED it was reported in Australian Hot Rodding Review of May 1966 that the car ran at the '66 US Winternationals clocking an 8.03/197 on the wheelstanding pass shown in the pic reposted by sideplatesix. It said that the driver was Ed Pink, would that be true that Pink actually drove the rail?

Did he build it for Dom Blasco? http://www.midwestgassers.com/members/blasco/dyno.htm
The car was very nice, it had a Grumpy Jenkins motor in it when Dom sold it to a friend of mine here in Texas a few years back. Damn shame to hear it crashed.

  26. ROOMAN: just curious, what do you mean "gutter machine bodied deals"? Are you talking about FEDs with no sheetmetal over the front frame??? Not trying to be rude, but trying to learn the finer points and details about FEDs for my "eventual" purchase "some day". Thanks!

By "gutter machine" I am referring to those square bodied "NEW" front engine dragsters. The bodies are so square and ugly that I can hardly stand to watch them run (not really but you get the idea). Big radius bends and a crown in the top of the body make all the difference and are not a whole lot more work.
Likewise the "high chair" cars where the driver looks as if he is sitting on top of the rear end housing rather than having his legs draped over it. Six point tractor pull tall roll cages also look bad in my opinion and I much prefer to build them with 5 point or single bend six point cages. Look at the pix of Tim Condor's car to see how good a six point cage looks if it is done right.
Shorty bodied cars are cool and Brendan's car has a set of different engine bay panels if he ever wants to run it that way.

High chair cars, Bingo! Better than watching nothing, I guess... but they are a disappointment, huh? Okay, they SUCK. Or funny cars with rocker skirts to the ground they never used to have, roof-high round snorkels on the hood of vintage Detroit Iron, barf out the sponsors into the microphone, NASCAR on Speed Channel...

    Sorry:mad::mad::mad:

    THIS is a roll bar

"gutter body" It's a FED with a modern T/F body, nose, and front wing on it.

Those are the most butt ugly dragsters I've ever seen.
