After I submitted my last msg I realized I had typed the wrong name for the USA 1 pilot. I was talking to a guy named Butch and typed his name. Of course the is only one Bruce Larson. GETTING OLD SUCKS. Mike

The one with Connie Kalitta is from Tulsa. The old tower is gone (I was the last one it it) & the track is a really nice facility now. I still go there almost every weekend. I really need to get some pics scanned & post to this thread!

Give us the low down on the do's and dont's of running a blown fuel BBC. Was it an L-88 427 or a 454? I didnt know that your brother Ronnie ran a narrow chassied rig, what year was that 1973?

we ran a 427 block bored 30 over, a radical Howard cam and rods, Hampton blower in the corvair and 71 vega. The narrow chassis vega wa build by Dave Stuckey and was very lightweight. His last run was in 73 at Kansas City beating Pisano and Matsubura in their yellow vega. Ronnie ran a 6;60 and over 222 using the chevy. He had been promised one of Nick Arias' hemi's and was contemplating buying a 426 from Mart Higginbottom but decided that an independent couldn't survive. You can see a good photo on the web. thanks for the interest. As for the Do's and Don'ts-don't run one if you intend to compete, do if you want to thunder at a nostalgia event. Mike

I recall Stuckey as being either from Kansas or Missouri. I assume that the Vega was weight legal by AHRA standards and not NHRA? The numbers you qouted were comparable to what a lot of the hemi powered rigs were running. In fact, other then the Arias powred King Camaro, I cant think of any RAT powered flopper matching those times. Even Dickie Harrels CAN AM aluminum RAT Camaro from 71 rarely nudged into the 6's. Testimony to how good the L-88 was, and your brothers tuning prowess. Howard cammed Chevies seemed to produce the best performance be it altered, flopper or top fueler.

Yeah, Stuckey was from that area. Ronnie ran his cars very conservatively from the start (1966) because Don Kirby(Corvette Auto Parts vette and beach city Vette) told him if he ran more than 25% nitro and more than about 25 or 30 degrees advance we would see rods and pistons on the pavement. He became aware that Harrell and Doug's Headers and Bruce Larson were running 90-95% in the tank and over 50 degrees advance. We had been running straight nitro for many races but, were reluctant to up the timing. We traveled with only one spare motor and limited parts so he relied on his holeshots (aka Rapid Ronnie) to win some races after the high dollar drivers went up in smoke after they realized he nailed them on the tree(sometimes). He rarely red lighted. He won the 1970 "Mr Chevrolet" title at Beeline running I believe a 6.99 or 7 flat at 199 with 95 % nitro and 50 degrees. We would have run alot faster in the early days had we leaned on it. who knows how many parts we would have trashed. He tells me that his last run that he won against Pisano and Matsubura yellow vega at KCIR he shelled the entire engine and went to his shop nearby to throw together some parts and while the likes of Jungle Jim, disassembled the car Ronnie had an ephiphany. As an independent he could not survive and sold the entire operation. Another shoulda coulda moment in our lives. Mike

Yeah, I came over to Danny's car too. Glad to hear from you. Are you the fella that I spoke to about re-creating one of the Blue Hell cars? Enjoyed talking with you and we plan to make it to Bowling Green, KCIR and bakersfield in 2011. I need to play the lottery so I can buy another ride in a fueler. Mike
