I've read that this was both the old Phil Bonner or Gas Ronda car. Anybody know for certain ? Thanks for all the pictures Muttley.

This was the old Hampton and Dye Fiat that was stretched and re-bodied. Check out the front axle and cross spring set up, not exactly state of the art funny car stuff. The car met its demise in Australia when Hampton ran into Jim Read's 67 Mustang (I think that Bob Dunn was driving the Read car but that was a long time ago). Hampton did bring a new wife (Shelly) back from Australia though.

    Thanks Buck.
Graham Withers in the Ampol GT car at Castlereagh. It started life as a Kellison frame and body package and was the first real fuel car that I ever saw run. It eventually morphed into the Hussey brothers car of which I posted some pix about a thousand pages back in this thread.

Not a car but definately in Motion. For some reason I doubt anyone has ever told EJ Potter to "Grow a Pair"!

You stirred the cobwebs in the memory bank,Roo.Do remember bits of that incident with Reads' car.Did not know it was the Fiat. Thanks for pointing out the front end.Sounds like Don wasn't all racing when he was there.

  20. This was Ronda's former '65 car updated for the '66 season but with a wedge 427 for power. Ireland never did receive a SOHC for this car during the time he raced it which was for several years.

  21. Yes it was Ronda's second car. The first one was crashed by Gas and this one was sent to him to finish the season. It then went to Ireland as stated. It eventually was painted with a wild paint job and was called the Klien Bird... It also ended up with a 440 Mopar motor in it from what I was told...
It has been restored back to it's Ronda scheme with a cammer and is in a collection in Florida.

Ernie Nicholson is often overlooked when the topic of succesfull African-American drag racers is brought up. For awahile, this car held the strip records for AA/GS at all three major So-Cal strips. Tony Nancy built his engines. And Racer Brown really promoted his car in their ads.
