Les Allen and the Wasp. He and his brother owned the jr fuel class in 1967. I would love to see the 8MM family films that came from from the camera mounted on the front of the chassis. HRM did a great article in their 1968 Yearbook promoting the class. It was done from the owners standpoint by featuring the cost of construction and maintenance of one of these cars. Basic set ups were also offered for those making the step from gas classes to a category of car that basically ran straight nitro right out of the can.

do you know if he is still in Des Moines Wash.? This is crazy I just saw a pic. of his car in Popular Hot Rodding (July 66). The door said Burien Wash. which is pretty rare, and got me wondering if he is still local to me? I read somewhere he builds custom bikes.

The George Cerny J/F car came to Australia, and later went to New Zealand, I believe it was a Woody Gilmore built car. Are there any more pics of it around?

This car had a one off mag rear end housing built by Woody Gilmore, who also built the car.

It wasnt uncommon to show up at Irwindale, Lions, wherever in so-Cal and see 20 of these things vye for a spot in an 8 car show. They would crackle and pop, as the engine was brought up to high R's, then bam go like a little rocket. Very close racing. The use of a mag rear no doubt leant towards the car to weigh, what..980 pounds wet?

The car that Ed Allison and I ran was under 900 lbs. Ed weighed 135. The car he built and ran with Fred Crow was a little lighter and sometimes used a mag block and aluminum heads from M/T's Indy car program since they both worked for M/T. Some of the F-85 Powered cars were even lighter.

That was what was so fantastic about this class, the Chrysler was heavy so it could not be dominant, but the other side of the equation was safety.
I saw a flyweight ex Pete Robinson fueler with a 354 in it splinter into a thousand pieces once when it went off the track in Nashville, killing the driver, a crash that should not have been so bad if the car had been built with more tubing.

We ran TG up untill it was killed by NHRA. It was a lot of fun and the cars were cool. We couldn't compete with the twins however.

I had everything ready to convert over to a twin as the kill point. It was really disapointing as the fans really liked the races and the racers.

If NHRA would have listened to us and madethe couple changes to prevent breakage of the up coming twins it would have been a show as good as anything at the time. The fans loved them...we like them and the show was great.

The same goes for the junior fuelers. There could be really neat class for 350 cu in motors today with nearly bullet proof parts available.

Saw these on one of the local forums and I thought it was a neat set up. Anyone have any information?

This car earned R/U at the 68 PDA Championships. In the course of making it to the final, driver Bobby Tapia ( a computer/math genius) ran an unheard 6.52. That was a good 4 tenths faster than anything around at the time. Proof that a pretty car can go fast.

One of only 2 or 3 non SBC in the class and yea, they dominated. Never had a 305" Desoto been so R&D'd.
