Dale Armstrong drove this car, and I believe he tuned and built its motor. Its owner, Gary Crane, was like Armstrong, a transplanted Canadian. This car was 392 powered, but was always felled by handling problems for one reason or another. It had a good chassis, Exhibition Eng. It was posted for sale for a good two years before it ended up in Canada wherein it ran as an injected A/FC of the same name.

This car has been restored and is in a private collection.

Notice how Mazmanian had abandoned his long time association with Isky and instead relied on its arch cam-war rival Engle. Polictics makes for a strange bed fellows

Mike Halloran was a full on rock scientist. His employer swayed him to abandon drag racing fulltime and return to building rocket engines.

I remember getting "Drag News" and following the "Cam Wars" with SWC, Mazmanian, Pittman and Ohio George in each issue. Sure was fun watching the write ups in the ads.

This was the old 1971 Dunn and Reath Cuda. A then 20 something Mike Detrech (spl) had but only competed in fun and grudge racing with a VW before purchasing this car. He made several license attempts under the tutalage of Jim Dunn. This BBQ run ended his attempts at the sport, as he walked away emotionally scared, but not physically thank God.

  25. Yet another #1 spot defense.

This picture speaks volumes about a much simpler era. No frills, no confusing rules, stutter boxes, etc...Just a blown nitro coupe racing a modified fuel roadster.

  28. You are exactly right. No tree either. Just the starter and his flags. Some of the best times of my life were spent sitting just above that sign. :)

  29. Here's the story that goes with the picture.

  30. Jeb Allen looking on in the red shirt(he was prob 18 in this shot),and it looks like Larry Sutton is taking a break from the starting line with a sandwich.
