    There's worse places and things you could be doing! Wish I could have made it, Lebanon has always been one of my favorite tracks!

    Any of you have any good photo's or stories for that matter of Green Valley Drag Way in Smith Field, Texas? The last photo if you can see it that little patch of concrete is all thats left of a famous drag strip today.

    I live right next to it and when I was growing up as a kid in High School during the late 90's early 2000's this place was like a myth. Some mysterious drag strip that was famous for its drag racing and its drag racers. None of the kids knew where it was but we all had heard of it. It was still there just behind a large grove of trees, until one day they started clearing it out for homes and realized I had passed it every day going to school. What I wouldnt give to have lived during your time guys and been a part of it. Not only the cars and the people but the morals and respect and love of country. So many things my generation lacks.

    Love the guns being sold next to the car parts and racing fuel. Fortunately Texas hasnt changed in the last 50 years as much as the rest of the country.

    <hr style="color:#D1D1E1" size="1"> I have an Ol' Drag Photos page on my site. I just added a series of four photos to it that I am very proud of. I took them at Sonoma in 1991 at the Jim Davis Memorial nostalgia race. I stood on the bridge that used to cross over the track and busted through the fencing that closed off the top of it. I snapped three pics of the Champion Speed Shop twin engine car coming at me. Got blasted by a cloud of smoke, I mean it physically pushed me back! Turned around and snapped one more when it was clear enough to see anything, and then ran outa there as security was coming! Here is the link:

    Please check out the store too! Thanks!!!

    I'll be the first to make an educated guess................appears to be a 250 c.i. Pontiac OHC 6.

    Not an Pontiac OHC-6. There are cam covers on the side of the block which the PMD motor doesn't have since the cam isn't in the block.

    shhh ............. it's a ford. probably a 300 out of a fleet delivery truck like UPS or similar with a custom hybrid cleveland head.
    don't tell anyone and see how long it takes for them to figure it out.

    I think that is a 240 or 300 cu.inch Ford six with the stock head.A Cleveland head would have the intake on one side and the exhaust on the other.Stock head had 12 ports.

    Garlits being pushed on to the fire up rollers. The push car would come from behind to hold it on there while engaged turning the wheels to start. All major league tracks had these, while out in the country, altereds and diggers were paired off at mid point or even the finish line and pushed toward the head of the track with a wide board attached to the front of the tow car/truck. The motors would belch fuel and oil and fire to life about the end of the bleachers while the announcer would be shouting his pre-race drama just before he was drowned out by the noise on the track.
    There is a magnificent you tube vid called Rickey's Garage with a modern day demonstration of this art from a bygone era being performed in a practice session. A must find and experience for anyone even vaguely interested !
    Ramblings from my memory is about the times we've left our shop with nothing but a bare block with a crankshaft in the car and put it together after we arrived. I still get tensed up today from recollections just prior to the first fire up not having heard the motor run before. A 1,000 things run through your head, but are quickly gone once it's primed and it comes to life and concentration quickly changes focus to the run at hand.

    Back to Top Gas for just a moment;
    Whose idea was it to turn the injector scoop around backwards? Was it to cure distribution problems from too much air or something?
    Those cars were in a league of their own.
