Diggin' the picture of Richard Petty in the Barracuda! Too bad he had a tragic experience in it.

He crashed his car at the Southeastern Dragway, in Dallas, Georgia, on February 28, 1965, killing an eight year old boy, Wayne Dye, and injuring seven others.

I believe it was a piece of the suspension broke making the car turn hard. If I remember there was little protection for the spectators.

Was it? I know they tried to sue Petty, Lee (his father) and Mopar for a million dollars (thats a million dollars in 65!)

Yes, from other pics I have seen, that is Eddie Hill in post #26709.

Also, post #26702, is Eddie with a lengthened chassis and full body.

I have various pics from Alton Dragway I plan on posting when I get time in a week or three.

    Dean,
I had to do a double take to make sure.
The purple car is Carl Stone's Rolling Stone. Pretty well known car around these parts. I'm pretty sure it's been (over) restored. He later ran a Funny Car with the same name.

  16. That RPU has '30 fenders, a full length bed, and that horrible square roll bar. Frank Kurtis would never do a square roll bar! Carl Stone pretty much owned the B/SR class before we built my roadster. Once I set the national speed and ET records at the '62 Winternationals, he never held the national record again.

A close friend of mine who drove some of my cars was there with his family that day. He is deceased now, but I recall his recollections of that event which was never very publicly recognized.
The event on the east side of Atlanta at Yellow River 4 years later however changed the way all racing events, and especially drag racing, would be handled. I hated to see the Coke Calvacade come to an end. A lot of local drivers got their licenses upgraded and signed off on when the pros came to town.
Anyone know whose idea it was to turn a funny car loose in 07' on a public road in downtown Selmer Tn? It was back in the news after the first settlements were just being reached last week.

I was at Yellow River that day, we had ran a friends 440-6 pack GTX that day and the day before. My friends and I were standing right across the track from where the car went into the crowd and had almost crossed the track before the run. That is something I will never forget.

Here are my first contributions to this post. These were all taken at Alton Dragway. I do not know the photographer. I met Mike Storey (stepson of John Storey, owner of Alton) about 1995, and these are from the family archives. Mike trusted me with the original photos to take home and scan them to floppy discs. I can't thank Mike enough, and now I'd like to share them with all of you. In the next few weeks, I will be adding a bunch more from the files. ENJOY....

For years, I had never heard of Yellow River, and whenever my friend talked about Petty at Dallas, I assumed it was the same catastrophic race changing event. Like my Pro Mod mistake above, the term Funny Car was used generically.
At any rate, even though through the years I ultimately did learn about Yellow River and Houston Platt, and it was not until joining the HAMB this year that I got to read actual commentary from real witnesses like yourself above.
Simply amazing to be caught in time like this. Tom S. in Tn.

Thanks alot for all your respones, hold on to your goggles boys, there's more coming down the road. One question though, is the photo size alright or will I get sent to the cornfield for not sizing them down. I have noticed that alot of people post thumbnail sized photos. I just prefer looking at the full sized pics without having to click on every single pic I want to see close up.
