Hot Rods Drag Racing Classes

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by BIGDADDYROTH, Jun 8, 2013.

  1. Trying to get a little drag racing class background from years past. I'll looking for how classes were seperated in the 60's. For example: Mid 30's Ford with a flathead V8 what would it be considered. Did some research and it get's a bit vague. Seen a few 30's considered as an A/B. Were they separated by engine size, supercharged? All help is greatly appreciated.

As clear as mud! It was usually CID to car weight, then things such as engine setback, type of induction, and type of fuel being used that starts to complicate matters. There's a class for every car, but whether that car is actually competitive remains to be seen. To build a car to a specific era will require a rule book from that era; not an easy thing to find. The old Competition Eliminator classes were further broken down into more specific classes, such as Modified Production, Gassers, Altereds, Fuel Coupes, etc. Not as many of those classes as there used to be. What you're describing would most likely fall into a Gasser or Altered class, and then be further classes on a CID to weight basis. Like I said, clear as mud. Butch/56sedandelivery.

  4. Wow, Wow, clear as mud I believe it. Well the Flathead is going to be in the 290's cid area, weight is not clear yet, so the markings on the vehicle would fall as? Crazy Stuff guess this is what they call making it exciting.

  5. if it won't have fenders,it will be an Altered
If it has a full body,it could be F/MP,or H/G
Flatheads ,and L-6's all ran in the same classes
There were other classes it could have run in,however,[just to mud it up some more]:D

  6. By the mid 60's you wouldn't find too many 1930's cars with a flathead still drag racing, at least not at any major tracks. They just weren't competitive anymore. They did make J/gas specifically for pre 1960 Flat Heads, in line 4 and in line 6's.
Until Nostalgia racing came along, the flatty's were pretty much done other than for fun.

The classes from the beginning & even into the 60s & 70s were based on several things. Stock bodies & engines. Stock bodies & modified drive trains & suspension (gas class). Stock body shells & relocated engines & custom chassis (altered &competition class). & finely racecars. Drag racing was designed as a participant sport & it still is even bracket racing.
