Great pictures...the topless Fiat was a coupe that the S&S guys cut the top off to make it a fuel roadster...I saw this explosion at Bakersfield, early 60s... if I remember right, the driver was Tom Walsh and he spent some sheet time after the fire...

Lots of favrorites here. The Kanishiro A/SR in the upper left was a killer; I saw it win street elim title at the last HRM meet in 69. Ed Sigmonds Snarpeezel and the flathead die hard in the DDT D/A roadster are very cool remenents from an era long since passed.

Does anyone have any more photos or info. on this one? Maybe the magazine (probably Hot Rod); and could scan the whole article? I had some old magazine 'cut outs' and loose pages that my dad had saved years ago.....and there happens to be no date or magazine info. at the bottom of these two pages I scanned.

It appears to be a '29 rpu body that had the back of a touring sedan or T bucket grafted on to it......with a homemade deck. I am just starting to build a loose replica of it (1/25th scale); and was hoping to find more photos/info. on it.

[IMG] Here is a color photo, shot by my friend Bruce Fergusen. This is at Charlestown Dragway in Rhode Island, around 1960 or 61. There was a big meet there that was feature in Hot Rod Magazine. The Flywheels car was featured in thier mag...so you will have to sift through a couple of years and you will find an article.

Thanks again! That is a real neat photo of the car too! I figured the photos I scanned had to be from '59-'61.....wasn't too far off then! LOL!

Here is a bad scan of a blurry B&W shot of the the Hine drag roadster. Not sure who, what, where, or when but I found it in Rich's roadster that was last registered in 1970 in PA according to the window sticker.

Some people say the A/SR's killed the true Gassers. They have helped along with move to AWB and flip top cars, but what great roadsters.

I think that the late model bodies killed off the true gassers, fans really couldn't tell them from funny cars...the street roadsters and gassers ran together for years ... sometimes competing for Jr eliminator.......fans loved the true gassers as much as they did the fuelers, nothing like seeing an early Willys or Studebaker running down Lions or elsewhere...

  20. This is exactly right. Hugh Tucker's AA/SR drove Maz, SWC, Pittman and others crazy. He kicked their butts in street eliminator at the national events.

I still haven't located the issue it was featured in yet..........if anyone can help me out with that I'd greatly appreciate it! Right now I am trying to figure out if the rear is mounted rigid or if it has a buggy spring under it.........tend to think it has a buggy spring seeing how it looks to have some sort of traction bars out back.

Here's photo of a AA/SR owned by Al Conn & Steve Roscoe. This car raced a lot at National Trail Raceway back in the '60s and at one time held an NHRA divisional speed record for the class.

Yeah, it most likely was.....I started with the Revell '29 rpu body and went from there on this project........got a ways to go though...especially since I've not been able to dig up any more ref. on it.

  27. Mohawk Dragway, late 1970s Stu Denyes just off the line . Slant six power from Sponsor (My shop). This car won a pile of gold in its day including a thrid at the first $1000 bracket race Cayuga ever held. Was also Stu's first time at a BIG race. He was a very good driver. Absolute murder to run against. Saw Stu walking around the pits at Picton Airport Drags last Sat. Who knows? Maybe he will come back out to play.

Outta curiosity Don, do you recall what he turned with that /6 altered?

  29. Yup 12.0s usually 12.05 etc. I beleive he had one 11.96 but I am not postive. I remember the build. TRW forged replacement pistons . 09 off the head , 030 off the block. 360 valves i shortened to fit and a decent bt not super extensive port job. Cam was a isky 550 grind on a slant six shaft. Converter was a API 5000 stall supposedly. The engine is still around and in good condition (in Trenton Ontario)although the cam got swapped out by an oversealous owner who didnt understand. Intake was an offy and carb an R1850 Holley. He ran a 4.56 tail I believe. Trans was a push button shifter from a 64 valiant which is the most reliable fool proof shifter ever invented. Car used a hand brake . You can see the handle near his elbow. I had driven this car several times myself. We started with a 170 and a corvair turbo. This one was a 225 030. naturally aspirated.
