    Hello,

The Getty Images shot of the Durfee Automotive roadster got me on a search through my files. I remember this roadster at Bakersfield 1960. The blown Olds powered roadster by Cirino, Groves and Durfee made a lot of noise every time it ran. As far as images are concerned, is hard to compete with the photos from the Getty Images photographers’ page. Those big negatives are hard to beat. This is a movie clip that looks like a still photo.

    Hello,
The unknown white roadster has been identified as belonging to Jess Van Deventer from San Diego. Here is the message I received from the San Diego Racing Museum Website: http://sandiegoracingmuseum.weebly.com/

"My name is Charles Randolph Chenowth , I go by Randy Chenowth. On the HAMB I am BIGDADDYUSMC ...

The white Roadster in your movie is Jess Van Deventer or his brother,,,, they both drove the car in the very late 1950's & early 1960's

The number on the car never changed ... it is #502 ( California penal code for drunk driving )

My father built that car in his garage in Imperial Beach, California in the late 1950's..It was originally built for a Bean Bandit... The T roadster was traded to Van Deventer for a street legal 32 roadster..."

Thanks Randy... Great information on all things racing in San Diego History...

Bernnie Osborn began racing in the late 1950s with a homebuilt Modified roadster that was later lengthened to accommodate two blown small-block Chevy engines to become very competitive in the Top Gas ranks.

Gary Burgin began his career driving supercharged cars, and one of his earlier rides was this A/GS roadster seen at Orange County Int’l Raceway.

HughTucker Like Kenny Safford and the Stone, Woods & Cook team, Tucker relied on Oldsmobile power during the early 1960s, and won Junior and Little eliminator at the 1962 and 1963 Winternationals.

Tucker later switched to a Hemi engine, which powered him to a Super Eliminator title at the 1966 Winternationals. He's pictured at the 1966 U.S. Nationals, racing Joe Davis' Mustang.

Interesting that the Mustang in the far lane is classified as a CC/FD, Blown C/Fuel Dragster.

Looking at the engine set back and apparent straight axle front end it appears to be early funny car. In 1966 it may not have had a "class".

Yep that is what it was according to the article.

  18. Interestingly, Hugh Tucker never owned any of the engines in his roadster. The blown Olds came from Hugh's partner, Dave Stoll's, boat. The Blown Chrysler was "borrowed" from John Rassmussen. The first engine Hugh built for the car is the Hemi he used in the restoration.

The Colt 45 Mustang was actually a steel bodied Fiat altered that ran a blown SBC. A stock Mustang body was adapted for early funny car racing.

    1967 world finals

Joe Davis drove the Davis & Ingram Jewel T AA/A to the Super eliminator title when final-round opponent Walt Marrs broke out by running .14-second under the national record with a 10.29. Davis’ winning time was a 9.11 on a 9.03 mark.

I was only 12/13 when I first saw Deans Roadster pick up. Kinda glad you left it original but my memory serves me well on how it was. The most beautiful car ever...

    Hey Dean,
Your old roadster looks very cool. (the new one, too) The candy colors were very popular in the late 50's and into the early 60's. It was a toss up between Candy Apple Red, and Tahitian Red as to which was the most popular in our neck of the woods. That last one (Tahitian Red) is similar to your Candy Persimmon. Here is a Candy Apple Red, roadster that looks like he just popped off of the street to make a few runs at Lions in 1959.

    Hello,
With all of the new names of paints, it could be Titian Red, but a quick Google search says it is a hair tint. The Tahitian Red color is currently a stock Honda color, I am sure it is based on the 60's paint called Tahitian Red. Look at some of the Watson / Cerny paint jobs from R&C...They were very popular as shown in the mags.

    Thanks,
    Jnaki
    FROM OUR FRIENDS AT KUSTOMRAMA:
"In 1956 Bob's Chevrolet received a scallop paint job by Larry Watson. ... One day his friend Gary McNaught came by the house and asked if he would come along down ... Larry painted the car in Tahitian Red and striped it in gold. ... to take parts of cars, prep them for work and paint, color sanding and all sorts of other tasks."

Hugh Tucker won the Winternationals three times in the 1960s in Little, Junior, and Super eliminators with his Olds-powered ’28 Chevy AAStreet Roadster entry.
