The COLT 45 Mustang started life as the Davis & Ingram Fiat BB/A. When funny car racing became more lucrative, they hack up a Mustang body and put it on the altered chassis. The Fiat body was found in a shed a couple years back and showed up here on the HAMB. I have not heard any news what the status of the Fiat body is. In 1966 there were no class for funny cars at NHRA national events, so they lumped them into dragster and altered classes.

There was no orange grove at the end of Pomona drag strip. Mountain meadows golf course was there. I have seen cars end up on the golf course across the street from the end of drag strip. The orange grove was on the west side across E street.

I bought my parts at C&W auto parts!

  7. In the 50's there was a small grove where the railroad museum is now. Not across the street.

Dick Kalivoda & John Hamlin teamed up in 1960 and raced this Modified Roadster in the D/GMR class.
The roadster was built in 1955 for Buck Stieber by Clarence Duffy, who modeled it after a Dirt Track Roadster,
but it always was a drag race car.

It was originally powered by a Ford Flathead on Fuel, but in 1959 owners Ed Norton & Army Marion changed the engine to DeSoto power .

Dick Kalivoda acquired the car in 1960, Dick and John Hamlin ran the car on Gas with a 296" DeSoto through 1961. Driver Dick Kalivoda set the NHRA national record for B/MR at 120.32mph on July 4th 1960 at SIR (Kent Washington)their first National Record ever recorded at SIR.

The Modified Roadster is now on display at the NHRA Museum in Pomona, CA just as it ran in 1961.

Interesting car, but how does it qualify as a "Roadster"?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that the frame in the photos was originally built for an Austin Bantam altered or something similar..?

I just posted somewhere on the HAMB about that Mustang but CRS and posting so much I forget where but I THINK it was a fiat altered or gasser. I will try and track it down.

EDIT: just took another look and it has to be the Pellegrini history.
Yes it WAS a roadster at one time LOL. from the Pellegrini story

Over the winter Ron founded Fiberglass Ltd and made a full mustang body. He then bought the complete Dennison, Arlasky, and Knox roadster less body and put his new fiberglass body on it.

  18. The Fiat/Mustang you are thinking about was the Colt 45.

Yep I was thinking the one with the TWO hines. Looks like Carroll switched cars or engines into the T and the roadster got a small block

I had a discussion with Dick Kalivoda about whether or not the car was ever raced on an oval track. Here is a shot from the mid-50's, notice the slicks on the front, and the side nerfs, two hallmarks of a "Circle Tracker". Another shot taken in 1960. kalivoda 1.jpg Kalivoda 1960.jpg

When I first looked at that Amarillo pic I thought "Why does he have the rear wing mounted backwards?". Then I realized it was the starter's box in the background. Now that thar's funny.
