Here's some pics of the Denny & Jerry Forsberg / Al Hubbard "Vic Hubbard Speed Shop" '35 Austin Bantam Altered:

First time out with the Austin and the Olds engine

The driver's compartment of the Austin: everything from
the bell housing to the steering assembly was hand
fabricated by Jerry and Denny at York's after work.

Al Hubbard, Denny, and Bob Zarth (of 'Purple Death' fuel additive
fame); this picture shows the roadster's dropped front axle and low
height built for the gasoline Olds engine. Denny and Jerry did not
want a lot of weight transfer (shown with Al's Chevy engine).

The Austin in B/FAR trim with straight front axle and raised spring perches.

  8. Put this version beside a stock Chevy roadster and you'll see how much it was altered for a better weight transfer. It wasn't legal, and no one ever caught it.

I think that the original metal body was legal, or close to it other than that absurd overhanging "gas tank" in the back. Dave Stoll told me that NHRA had apparently never seen an early Chevy roadster before and they bought into that lead filled "gas tank" extension. But once the body was duplicated in fiberglass, that was a different (and illegal) story. But in looking at many other "plastic" bodies and even some OEM bodies, particularly on the AA/SR cars, there was a lot of "cheating" going on with body and wheelbase dimensions. NHRA let this class get away from them and as you correctly stated, nobody called them on it...

  13. Per Hugh Tucker, The Olds powered, steel bodied version was legal. The fiberglas body was shortened. The headrest was full of lead to add back some of the weight lost when the frame was shortened. NHRA never caught that either. Hugh smiled when he told me "all the gasser boys tried and tried to claim I was somehow cheating with the engine/weight combination when I had them covered in the little eliminator run offs". "None of them ever even thought about body alterations". :)

Today's "T" and Bantam altered bodies have 'wind tunnel' morphed into nothing like the earlier, more stock appearing fiberglass copies. Its a lot like how the Pro Mod bodies have been contorted and slicked over to cheat the wind.

As somebody once quipped, "Progress was alright at one time, but it went on way too long."

I am the caretaker of one T built in the 70s and one built in 2010. See the differences?

Hugh wasn't that popular with the Gasser guys in the NHRA Eliminator run-offs. This is the original body version...

  19. Hugh was capable of running over 4 tenths under the AA/SR class record. Back then the Little Eliminator cars were handicapped according to the NHRA class records. The A/GS record was close to mid nines by then as the class was so competitive. Hugh made sure his qualifying tuns were real "soft". Manuel Herrera and his dad approached me about letting them put their engine in my RPU so we could get the AA/SR record down closer to where it should be. While it would have been fun, the changes needed would have destroyed my car for street use, and I really had nothing to gain from it. It goes to prove George's point. The gasser boys hated Hugh and his roadster!

Anybody recognize this Coupster drag car that we presume raced in the mid-to-late '50s?
