Proposed new rules for Hot Rod magazine's Drag Week were released today. There are big changes to the Hot Rod cl***, it's pretty much wide open now. also, G***er is split into two, with a separate cl*** for Blown cars. http://www.hotrod.com/dragweek/hot_rod_drag_week_2015_proposed_rules_are_here/ I've been on Drag Week 3 times, it's a blast! Takes a pretty big commitment of time, money, and preparation.
Yeah, the proposed Hot Rod rules read like an Unlimited/ProStreet cl*** for early models. I'm sure there will be some changes but hopefully not a a free for all like they have writen now.
I watched the live feed every day and thought about how cool it would be to try. The two things that killed it for me were (1.) a 2k mile drive just to get to the starting point, and (2.) my car wouldn't be compe***ive in ANY of the cl***es. I wanted to run in the Hot Rod cl*** but it's pre-'49 so my '53 (even if it had a Hemi) wouldn't qualify. My friend joked that the only cars I could beat where the VW and the 283 2bbl carbed Impala (both ran in the 18-20 sec range) Ouch!
they announced the new rules for 2015 at pri but did not get into specifics that i could find for the hot rod cl***. i heard they loosened up the rules some but i can't find what they changed.
The biggest change in hot rod I could see is the upping of the engine ci limit along with newer engine family means big blocks can now play. The proposed rules would have allowed a '23 to run but the actual rules put the age limit at a '28, like it was before. So, my '26 can't run.
wtf no one ever hot rodded a 26 back in the day. some times i don't get their rules. with that said it is one incredible week of fun.
They've finally released the dates, and the location of the first track. Week of September 13, starting from Gateway in Madison, IL (St. Louis metro area). http://www.hotrod.com/news/2015-hot-rod-drag-week-day-1-track-announcement/
tune in as they announce a track a day. i think from now on dw will only be racing at larger tracks. with car counts and spectator counts going up. also the fans want to see the heavy hitters lay down some numbers that only a good facility can provide. dw will most likely be revisiting some of the previous years tracks.
Day three is being held at great lakes drag o way in beautiful union grove wi. Its about four hrs north of indy. I am offering a open invitation to all hamb compe***ors. You can stay at my place if you like. Union grove is my home town track. Im four exits north of the track a short distance from i-94. I have a full shop if repairs are needed. You can camp if you want. We are gun friendly and have a shooting range if you want to blast away. There is a pool if you need to cool off. We could have a cook out also. A home cooked meal would be a nice break from the road food. I have a lot of room. Cars can be parked in my shop at night.
great offer Brian! I am hoping the fans of DW decide to show up at GLD. Perhaps we can organize something for the HAMB guys that show up. I am 70 miles West, but will be there for sure. now to see where Day 4 ends up..............
My guess would be cordova. Rt 66 is too close to gld. Bob we have some time to figure some thing out. Lets do it. Two years ago i changed spider gears at a friends shop in indy. I already gave him a heads up i will be coming through town. Im hoping we can just hang out and not work on the car.
Squirrl what ever we can do for you while you our states guests just ask. Gld is a great place. The weekend before dw there is a big race held at gld. The track will have been very well prepped for that. The traction should be great.
i will have to look at that. in years past it was no chopped top with a blower. i ran that two years ago without the blower. still ran the eight strombergs. it ran pretty good for a blower cam and 8 to one compression. went 11.5
reread the final rules. no power adder in hot rod. looks like street machine for me this year which was daily driver last year. they did lower the cl*** to 10.0. sure beats 10.8.
What week will it be this year? If it's in September I have some vacation time, and would like to spectate at least.
Perfect! I have been checking off and on, for dates and locations. I will be in Kalamazoo on the 13th, and can continue from there.
Registration is open now for hot rod magazines drag week. Im in. So pumped to be racing in front of my home town friends at the grove. I hope all the hambers that tried to get in were successful. Lets hear who got in.
I made it. Mike (bulletproof) was pre registered since he placed 3rd last year. Hemi Joel also made it in.
i had my sons friend actually register me. he is in michigan just outside detroit. they were room mates in collage. i don't trust my computer skills. my son bought a house last week so he won't be competing this year. he will be riding shot gun. i looked on the drag week web site. it took considerable longer to sell out this year. a whole 16 minutes compared to 8 last year. are you taking the nova or the coupe.
Im planning on taking the coupe again. The back up plan is the chevelle. Im so pumped up i could hardly sleep last night.september cant come too soon.
bob wop and i want to do some thing for the hamb racers when they come to the grove. we were thinking a cook out. either at my house which is fairly close to the track. or something at the track. at the track we could park in a designated area. my wife offered to do the cooking so we can wrench and race. if any one has a idea to share let us know. we also will need a head count.
Wow, thanks! Although it kind of depends on how things go, we usually like to make a p*** and hit the road kind of early. And when we get in the night before depends also on how things go. Drag Week is kind of hard to plan ahead for!
