Dragster frames........picture thread.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Royalshifter, Dec 21, 2007.

  1. Anyone own an original Dode Martin or Jim Nelson frame, dragster, or partial? Anyone have photos/history related stuff to the Dragmaster shop or these gents? I'm doing a little research and wondering if anyone might be able to help. Pm me with some details if you do. Thanks...

I am aware of the shop in Carlsbad, and I am in contact with Mr. Nelson, but I'm wondering if we have any collectors here with some possible history? Appreciate any help... Mel

    Hey Big Chuck:

Mark Williams is the only person I know of that makes them today with regards to Drag application. Have one on my car.

I would like to see the same. I've been studying the subject for over 30 years, and the more I learn, the more complex the subject reveals itself to be. That seems to be the reason there is not a "code" answer to the issue. Unfortunately, we don't always get black and white answers to our questions, sometimes we have to deal with shades of gray. The further we investigate physics and etc. the finer the shades of gray get.

Not having a 'code' approved by an engineer does not mean that there is not a 'correct' way to do the job, techspeak notwithstanding.

When I was young and knew everything, I felt the same way. I thought education and my IQ reigned supreme. It took 53 years of hard knocks and errors but I finally am ready to listen to the 'Old timers' and 'dumbasses'. Unfortunately many of them are gone, and can no longer be heard, and I'm starting to look like one. I don't take their word as gospel, but I no longer discount it out of hand because it differs from what I believe at the moment. Hearing and listening to 'old wives' tales' has taught me a tremendous amount that the books couldn't, even if only to increase my peripheral vision, so to speak. Having the answer for sure means you are missing something.

I've met hundreds, thousands, of folks who have completed years of higher education. Some of them have gone on to acquire multiple advanced degrees, PHDs, JDs, etc.

A few of them have, in later life, overcome all that and become interesting, productive, worthwhile members of society. :)

I do not discount old timers out of hand. In fact, I seek them out and ask them for their expertise and advice. I don't blindly follow it, but their advice has proven indispensable in the past.

What irks me is this notion that some people have that because you've been to college, you're automatically less able to build things or reason through problems. The fact of the matter is, that I am a better fabricator and designer for having been to college, not worse. I am 100% better at solving problems efficiently for having been to school.

    Engineers are professional problem solvers.

The good ones learn something every day.

The bad ones can't find the ball valve on the air line, and assume the air wrench is defective.

I think the best thing to take away from the books is the ability to deconstruct and really understand the mechanics behind how and why the old hand's processes work.

  11. When are we going to get back to dragster frames and put the welding class into it's own thread?

Back to the subject line. The fish mouthing was done with a belt sander and 1/2 round bastard file. I had my whole chassis, on the fixture jig, marked all the tube centerlines with a Sharpie and used Zip ties to hold the tubes in position. When the tacking began, those zip ties went flying.

  27. This is the only shot I have showing a Chassis Research Altered frame. It's from an old magazine advertisement.
You could print it out and blow it up.

Probably not vintage, but I saw this tucked behind a shop the other day...

Some kind of jet engined dragster.
