I Drag, You coined it right. Going fast is very expensive and a LOT of MAINTENANCE. I'm slowing my car down a bit so I can once again drive to the staging lanes and back to the pits. Way more fun.

WeldWorks, Great information and thanks for sharing. You obviously know your stuff having worked for a company that makes some of the fastest and safest cars at the drag strip.

Riceman, Love the single hoop cage and see that there are a lot of them in this thread. Coming from having to meet NHRA specs and pass their tech at almost every event, where do you guys get to race the single hoop FEDS and what MPH or ET are you limited too?

King, Your builds with the laid back hoops look bitchin. If you have to meet NHRA specs, you are doing it with the right look. Love it man. Some cool FED's there.

I have been looking at FED chassis for a long time with plans on building one in the near future. Personally the looks of a single hoop cage can't be beat. But as cars got faster and people started getting hurt because their head was not fully protected the double hoop was implemented. Now I think KING's laid back double is about as cool as a double can look and still meet Safety Requirements.

Following are some of the FED pictures that I've collected, mainly to see how different builders set their cage hoops. My personal favorite for a new version is Thad's FED that was built by a shop in Louisianna.

Some guys like the more straight up hoops, and some like the squared off hoops. My favorites are low, round and laid back.

excuse my ignorance, but why do a lot of the late style cars use small diameter tires and minimal engine rake ?

I believe the second picture is of the chassis' that outfit on racing junk sells pretty cheap. I just don't care for the way they attach their front axle, but they do have a bitchin fiberglass chute pack body.

The early rails had a huge engine tilt because the engine was so close to the rear end. When they started putting transmissions behind the engine it moved the engine further forward and less of an angle was needed to line things up.

Here's a couple of pictures of a car that runs a transmission. You can see where the engine is set much further forward eliminating the need to tilt the rear of the engine up to couple with the rear end.

These all more than likely just used a clutch with a direct coupler to the rear end. No driveshaft. Some of them set the engine so close to the rear end they had to shave the 2 rear exhaust tubes to clear the tires.

Steve Barcak who runs the Apple Crate, Pontiac Heaven FED has a wealth of knowledge regarding old and new FED's and has taught me a lot on the subject.

Old dogs and new tricks I suppose.

I assume these cars today are not clutch cars but rather use a converter. That could explain smaller tires perhaps.
I never had a high gear car, ours used clutchflites. Our tires were 12 to 16" X 32 or 33" on 16" wheels. Our last car had gone to 15" Halibrands by 1975 though.
I can not recall how far out the motors were, but we still maintained several degrees of rake in an effort to add load to the front end at speed, plane the car out, and gain stability in the lights.
Even the rear motored car we had in later years maintained the same specs in the back half as the conventional cars did, including rake and etc. Just a car wider in front of the motor for the driver and nothing behind the rear axle like a cock pit. In fact, the first rear motor car I actually saw was an old conventional car that had been converted.
Some of the beveled exhaust on #7 & 8 you see used to be done to clear away tire smoke. I often wonder if a lot of folk today don't realize the pics they see prior to the 70's where the car is smoked in is not a burnout, but rather the actual run.
