1. Unbolt carb 2. Remove SBF 3. Insert SBC 4. Re-install carb ha ha. just kidding --- this one looks bad ass. You could even paint the fins the same color as the block.
this is in my Ranchero- whats the story on the T-bird valve covers... are those fabbed up? cuzz they look pretty legit- makes it look OLD. Nice.
I used Original Buddy Bar castings "Power By Ford" Valve covers. Original Buddy Bar Casting 2X4 Intake. But I use a repo Cobra pan Because I can't afford a real one!!!
http://home.comcast.net/~superhart/adapterinstructions.htm damn... this is cool. so you can adapt FE valve covers to a SBF. whats cool is that those valve covers look RAD compared to any sbf cover- even plain jane FE's... no-namers but then you get into all the cobra stuff- and the pent tops etc... wow. ok i dont usually like fake stuff- but thats kinda neat. its aimed at the cobra crowd. neat.
I've seen photos of a SBF with a crab type distributor cap. Has a cleaner look. Anybody know what cap or distributor it is? Ford? Aftermarket?
What about like this? You don't need the Webers, but the valve covers are nice. I think I bought them new for <$50, then modified them with the tall breathers. Paint the block and heads black.
Von Dago I run one in my Falcon. It is a mallory dual point converted over to Petronics with a early flatty ford cap. You have to machine down the dist a tad to make the cap fit
I posted a finned alternative besides cal-customs on here before, but can't find it. so to keep it HAMB period correct: block and heads=black. covers are one of these colors:
I am in the same boat as every one else. I am building a 393 stroker out of my 351 W but want that old look...to some degree anyway..
thanks everybody. i'm liking the cal custom stuff. as it happens, the motor is a 1965, so maybe i'll go black block gold covers and keep it correct if i don't get a pair of the finned ones. valve covers are where i'm going to start, as it came equipped with a pair of shitbasket rusted parts store chrome cheapos that match the rusted parts store chrome aircleaner. does anybody know how long the edelbrock finned covers have been manufactured? is there anything period about those at all? also, can anybody give me some more details on that mallory distributor swap? it looks bitchin'. keep it coming, the juices are beginning to flow.
Actually, even a tad bit before then...the 221 was available (approximately) September of 1961. The 260 came out in Spring of 1962. Production of the 289 began in December of 1962, but I don't think it was available until March/April of 1963.
The 1963 Hipo 289 had gold valve covers (or optional chrome), with black block/heads/intake/pan. The 1963 289 non-Hipo had white/cream colored valve covers again with black block/heads/intake/pan. The 1963 valve covers were non-vented. I think that some 1964 valve covers were vented, and some were not. I don't know about the 1964 colors.
Here is mine in the 35. I just kept the timing chain cover bare and used the cheap aftermarket valve covers off ebay.
My 64 Fairlane hipo 289 had the gold covers and a single point distributor with a cast iron intake. The 65's got the dual point and the alum. intake. It also had the same air cleaner that you see all the time but was painted instead of chrome.
here's my 289 with an original FORD 2X4 intake and FORD Holley carbs C6OA-9510-A List 3360 & C6OA-9510-B List 3361.
yes, speedway cover, the fins on the cover were mill to fit the emblem with our any gap between fins and emblems, the attaching tabs were kept and the cover drilled and reamed so the emblem would be a precsion press fit. did not want any nuts on the inside to fall into motor. wait unitl the exhaust tips are done
See if you can find some OEM marine valve covers....lots of inboard craft used 260/289/302 and they generally had their logo on the V/Cs...or at least a decal. Something different for sure. OEM Shelby stuff is great, but prices are approaching the stratosphere....repops are more reasonable and most hot rodders aren't after originality. dj
Those are the ones that indicated you had the 312 Y Block ! They were on the front fenders ! Nice idea to dress up the Cal Customs !
Well I have this set up and will be available at some point this year. Waiting on upholstery shop the install new motor thats just waiting on the engine stand and just more ideas for you to decide on
hot turkey- are you ditching those old ford factory bits, the stamped steel ones, in favor of the finned ones? might be interested in buying them off of you if you aren't planning on keeping them...
