The thing about shapring a drill though is...how hard can this be for guys who work metal for a hobby?
Anyway, my point is that when you learn to sharpen you can sharpen a drill specifically for different materials, hardnesses, back relief, etc. for whatever it is that you are doing at the time. It's not that hard, but your fingers do get all wrinkly.

My brother got a drill doctor because he can't get the knack of hand sharpening. I have tried using a couple times (after reading directions). I sharpen bits by hand, much faster and every bit as sharp as D.D. (pun intended)

As far as I'm concerned the Drill Doctor is the quickest way to sharpen bits. The only regret I have is that I didn't purchase the larger model to do over 1/2" bits, but even so its an awesome tool!

  4. well last fathers day, my daughter and wife bought me the mack daddy 750dx. With the back cut feature, it's BALLS TO THE WALL AWESOME!!! I too wonder how long that diamond wheel will last. I have done at least 1000 bits as mentioned earlier, and it is still goin strong. I sit for hours at times and measure the angles and sharpen bits. I love it. If you do get one, get the biggest, baddest mofo they have out with a case. ...

I have the 750 & it does a great job. Easy to use, only takes a few seconds to sharpen a bit. I kicked myself for not getting one earlier.

I love mine,I should of had one years ago. I would have saved the price of several electric drill motors that I burned up drilling with dull bits. I am not as young as I used to be,and my eye isnt quite as sharp as it used to be,so sharpening by hand is sort of a hit or miss situation.:)

I have a 750 kit that came with both chucks to do up to 3/4" bits. I have tried several times to sharpen by hand, and I **** at it. I Really like the DD, and have used it a lot. Matter of fact, after I first got it, I sharpened all my bits, then wen to my dads and spent four hours sharpening 30 years of his belt sander butchery attempts at sharpening. He was quite happy after that with his drill performance.

Add me to the 'love it' list...got it for Christmas last year after seeing my machinist using his. It's quick and easy to use - money well spent.
