Just finished drilling '40 Ford backing plate. Took about 1 hr to lay it out and 2 hrs to drill all the holes in just one plate. Time consuming but worth it.

Looks nice. I'm planning on doing this to my f-1 brakes if I can ever figure out how to lay the pattern out evenly

  4. Very nice job. I like the layout, I might have to give it a try on mine.

    Sweet.

We should have a thread dedicated to patterns/hole sizes/layout etc.

That is rad. I really want to drill some, I tried it once, at about 22 years old. Wound up working on my hole filling skills.

There is one, I did that in CAD and posted it here for people to use as repayment for all the help/entertainment I've gotten over the years...

  14. Your two templates in that link Ollin i posted above for everyone else to use. If anyone had missed your thread they would of found the templates in this one.

Those templates are super helpful, if we are allowed to drill backing plates here i will be using them also! Thanks mate!

Looks like at least 5/16 or 3/8 on the original post. Nice work!

I want to drill out my backing plates on my 32. The only thing holding me up is I drive the thing everywhere and get caught in the heavy rain sometimes. Drum brakes that get wet are terrible.

I like it, but should I be concerned about backing plate strength or warpage after drilling? Just asking.

  21. I like the look. How many drill bits you go through??

Should be zero, if you are using good bits, and plenty of oil

I have bits, which are used frequently, that are older than me. They are a little shorter than new, now, but still good.

    3/8" holes. Brakes are from a late '70's Ford F-150 9" rearend.

nasty brown wasps love those holes and will build nests inside. Beware!

I'm curious to know those holes work in the rain? Down here, we get rain winter and summer. Brake fade is always a factor when brakes get wet, hence the use of disc brakes on later production vehicles. If you've ever tromped on the stop pedal and nothing happened you know what I mean. What about it? Anyone drive these holy relics in the rain?

I took the patterns to my local printer, had them scaled down to 12", started center punching, drilling, and have gotten this far. It's a TON of work but so far I'm happy.

There are a few adjustments to be made but I'll detail that tomorrow.
