drilling TBI heads to fit 400 sbc

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by purpledragon, May 14, 2011.

  1. OK, I have drilled other sbc heads to work on a 400.Can I do the TBI swirl ports the same way? This engine is going in my 95 silverado that I pull my race car and bass boat with.I want to use the same top end so the computer will work. Not going for performance just torque and economy. It's a 409ci. with a low lift computer compatible cam and some low compression dish top pistons.Any help is appreciated..............

  2. You should be able to do this to just about any SB head, although small bore heads(265,283,305) won't be good for this application. We used Vortec heads on a 400 quite some time back, and the machine shop drilled the holes.

I did it once. Never again. The compression was too high, it detonated terrible. I had to back the timing up and then it would run terrible.

  5. Thanks guys, I figured I could as I have done before. The steam hole on the intake side has to be drilled at 30* and the exhaust straight in.Compression wont be a problem as I am using a 30cc dish and a .051 gasket 64cc chamber should be around 9.25-1. sorry it took a couple days to reply, been busy spoiling the new grand baby.............
