Well you and I have had similar youthful experiences ( I did read the second book by the way Lance I think loaned me a copy) so while you and I have juggled a "drink" or two most of these guys have not I am sure.

Reminds me of a story, in our ill spent youth my little brother and I were out enjoying a Friday evening in his '64. Late we were headed to our place and he kept handing me is drink and saying hold this. Finally I turned the dome light on and found that he was driving with his hand over one of his eyes, said he was seeing double. So I decided it was time for me to try and drive so he could hold his own damned drink. I guess he could have used a cup holder.

I used to have one of these, it had rubber on the bottom and it was fairly heavy. You could set it on the seat the dash or the floor and it worked perfect. Although the dash only worked well when you were cruising the interstate.

I've actually purchased a commercial PRT for the '32 truck. Important to hang the top where you won't make a mistake while groping for your cup holder in traffic.
Hey! I could pour my coffee right down the PRT as I pull out of the Dunkin Donuts, and save a lot of lost motion. And I wouldn't need the cup holer any more, cup could go right to rolling around on the floor!
Hmmm...and now I want an authentic WWII cup holder from an SBD or something. Damn this board.

 

They are hard to use in a open cockpit

 

I tried the roll of duct tape on the floor trick
car rode so stiff it shook all the coffee out of the cup before I had a chance to drink any
later that same day I grabbed a bottle of water and held that between my legs
it lasted just about as long

 

I have a single cup holder from the local cheepie auto parts store velcroed in my center console just drive with the lid open when needed (every morning!) Saw a custom console with a 58 chevy tail light bezel used for a holder.

 

I use my old boot on the passenger seat. It's insulated and beat up looking like my car and truck. works great.

 

Here's mine in the OT Hotrod Sports Car. Its on the back side of the glove box door.

I liked the 65 chevy tailight idea so much I blew $5 on one at the local swap meet today. I love the idea of a lighted cup holder!

 

I got one of these also, but I had to take it back, the wife (now ex) had no sense of humor.

 

Late model Toyota Highlander SUV has a nice center console in the rear seat with a couple cupholders and a storage compartment. Happened to ride in one a while back.

 

6 dollars can buy you a cup holder that hangs from your door. I keep mine in my back floor board until I roll into sonic. The only bad part is the condensation drips right on my leg [emoji23]

 

Yeah, I need one for my 41 Chevy. I like my coffee in the morning, but trying to hold it while shifting the 4 on the floor can be a problem sometimes

53 Chevy , moredoor Mostly done to clear shifter, notched seat & whole "cup holding" unit removes. Flux.

Sure makes adjusting the valves easy

I used to have one of these back when I had to work for a living. A couple times it survived a 50 mile ride to work on the Bardon bumper of my 72 Chevy 3/4 ton 4 spd. And I'm not known for driving sane.

 

I have used duct tape for years there's sticky on the side to hold it to carpet, some times you might use some to get you home, and some times you can use it for the e-brake be hide the wheel.

 

I banged this thing out last weekend. I need to find some inserts to slide into the holes and finish grind my welds. Nothing fancy just functional

 

In my Roadster I use a 2 cup deal with sliding ends that I got from Pep Boys. It sits right in front of my seat screwed to the floor. It is flat black so it blends in with the carpet. You really have to look to see it.

 

Looking at ideas to build something like yours. I found a bunch of "hot rod" shops selling the inserts, but they seemed kinda pricey. Then I found casino supply places selling them cheap. Stainless, aluminum, plastic, brass.

Like someone pointed out earlier,a large roll of duct tape is sticky enough on the edge to stay in place and not damage the carpet but will hold a large travel coffee and not turn over.

If you happen to have the boss lady with you she can serve as the cup holder. HRP
