I rebuilt a junkyard 9" to replace the Dana 44 that a few bearing went in and threw a bunch of metal into the gear set. I put the 9" in my 51 Ford pu behind a sbc/th350. Now, when slowing down until about 10mph it sounds like my trans is making this loud rubbing noise, but it's not grinding. It shifts fine and seems to work fine any other time except when I take my foot off the gas. When the bearings went I was on the highway and while slowing down the truck bucked, and lurged some. I noticed that the slip yolk on the drive shaft use to have 3/4" sticking out (w/dana)and now it has about 1 1/2". If I shift into neutral while slowing the noise stops, but I can kinda feel it in the shifter. Does anyone have any ideas, before I tear it apart again, please? Thanks for your time, Cory
Since you mention the slip yoke - it sounds like a likely place to start. If you have substantially LESS engagement than before it could be wobbling around in there - even moreso iof the trans bushing has some wear. Can you walk us through how you set up the yoke engagement???
