you guys drive yours daily? including winter? Just curious, Im selling my daily driver pick up. just asking? I am dying to drive mine everyday. but I got to get it liscenced and insured. Looking to use the moola I get from the truck and put it into car. just a poll!
My 54 was pretty much my only transportation for about 10 years. Now, as a corporate drone, I drive a company car (Saturn Vue). When my 54 is roadworthy again (in a few months) I'll be driving it weekly and doing my best to drive it cross-country at least once a year.
I would drive mine daily but with the straight six / Ford-o-matic not being able to go as fast s I would lik and not trusting it completely because of age and a 45 mile commute each way I am going to wait till I drop in the 5.0 till I drive it more regularly. Then the family is going to use it as our family vacation car and go on some long distance vacations with it. Maybe a cruise across route 66?
Once i get mine running and driving i plan on driving that thing everywhere. Or at least 4 times out of the week. It'll have a 5.0 in it, so it'll do good on the fwy.
Driving what you build is where the pride comes in! I can't see the sense in having a "trailer queen" unless you are filthy rich and want to admire the money you spent having someone else do your work because you didn't want to get dirty. To me that is warped thinking and makes no sense.
I have a 70 mi round trip to work and I try to drive mine to work once a week or so. Hopefully once I get the overdrive put in the car it will be a little better. The flathead and three speed are maxed out at 60 mph. Its hard to go from a big roadhog diesel pickup to a little car on the shoulder most of the way, but I still have fun.
No, not up here in Michigan in the winter. And I wouldn't anyway. I'm 53 miles one way from work and I pool in a "short bus" with 7 others. I'm fortunate that my '56 will be my "toy" to play with when or if I want to.
Now that I'm not a poor high school student/active duty military/college student, I tend to let my antiques be my toys and drive something that I don't care about to work everyday. Around here (Houston metro), you can be the best driver in the world and some ***** will slam into you anyway. I've been hit sitting perfectly still, twice in the last few years. So...I like to drive my rod for pleasure and let my work car get the hell beat out of it if I can. That hasn't always been the case, but it is for the time being.
Yeah, no way would I drive mine in the winter in WI. I would drive it to the office, but my new locale is an "upscale" mini-mall type thing and you should see the people slamming into one another just backing out of their stalls- soccer moms in SUV's with their cell phones glued to their ears are just as bad as drunk drivers in my book. Even when I'm toolin' through the country, I get bunged up with all of the ****ty drivers out there. People don't realize how much lead time you need when you don't have juice brakes.
I plan on driving mine daily! it has the inline 6 and to me going fast isnt important to me, as some of those ordinary drivers or should i say abnormal drivers! it will be interesting I here people say that the inlines 6 are built like tanks! well see I guess!
Oh, yeah about those bad "drivers". State of Michigan gives 'em a license but don't care if they can actually drive. I taught all 3 of my kids to DRIVE, long before they took driver's ed. I work in the metro detroit area and believe me, if I didn't have to drive some of the freeways around here, I wouldn't, and I darn sure won't be driving my cl***ic back/forth to work. A coworker got shot at the other day cuz apparently the guy who shot at him thought he got cut off at a red light. Tore up the decklid on his car but it could've been worse. Back to driving the old cars - I see them during my commute and part of me is jealous but I keep wondering how long before they become "roadkill". I gotta give a lot of credit to you'all who do drive your old cars daily. Guess if I lived in the country or didn't have to commute where I do I'd have a different perspective. But yeah Rustyford, you hit the nail.. Now that I don't have to drive my old ride all the time, I won't. I kinda got used to no-leak windshields, solid floorboards, soft, can't-feel-the-springs seats, and power steering !
When I finally get the drive train in my 55 Fairlane I will be driving it as much as I can . My wife knows that my favorite thing to drive is a pick up and she told me when we finish paying off the wagon I have now that I can look for a pick up to buy . I am going to be looking for a Ford p/u in the 1950's to early 60's to buy . I want something that I can drive and work for me when I need to pull my boat or haul something . I also will be able to do all the work on it as well unlike the newer cars & trucks we drive . The insurance is a lot cheaper too ! Can't wait till about a year or so ! I do admire all the hard work for a beautiful antique car or truck but why do people spend all the money and never drive them ? What a waste of great machinery ! Drive them , that is what they are for ! RetroJim
I guess the other part of the equation for me is not wanting my old car to sit in an employee parking lot all day, every day. Back when my 54 was my college car I'd cringe when I'd come up to my car in the parking lot and find a smashed taillight or something like it.
