Hey guys I hope you can give me ideas in what to look for and also I hope the mods keep this thread on the main forum for a little bit before they move it to the antiquated side. It's a dana 70hd rear end. I was getting flat towed at the beginning of the year when the brakes locked on the street and I had to cut the front pass brake hose. The brakes release and I was able to make it home. I HAVENT FIXED the cut line. Today I lifted all for wheels to the ground. The front wheels spin by hand, the passenger spins freely by hand but the driverside "catches" on something. So when I put it in reverse the passenger spins as it should but the driver side won't.. I turned the truck off and I took the wheels off then the axle... The funny thing is that the driver side drum now spins freely... Maybe something broke inside the pumpkin?? I'm about to pull the drum off and then the diff cover but I want ideas while I work on that... I just need the truck to move in and out of my driveway not ready for the street.. And I will eventually go through the brakes again... Thanks in advance.
Have you pulled the drum off to see if it’s not a shoe pulled out of place and jambing everything up?
Sounds like taking the wheel off has allowed some rust or debris to clear itself from the inside of the drum. Unless you mean that the drivers side now moves so freely you think it’s no longer connected to the driveshaft??
Update...took the bolts off the axle to the drum and the axle spins freely in reverse.. Put two bolts on the axle to drum and it catches... Took the drum off and shoved the axle in there and the axle spins freely... Like @Tim said, maybe a shoe ...will keep updating...
I had a full floating Dana 60 in a ‘63 F250. With a full floating HD truck axle it’s possible to pull/ remove the axle shaft with the wheels on. With the center unbolted it should yard roll ok. The axle shaft does not hold the wheel****embly on on a heavy duty full floating axle. Something is broken in that axle. Either the axle shaft or it’s something in the center.
I hope not... BUUUUUT I have the transmission in 2nd gear and both wheels turn both ways while the D/S is locked... So that might be why the truck was acting like the brakes were locking
