Technical drivers side alternator mount SBC - WTF is wrong ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, May 23, 2017.

  1. This is in my buddy's 62 nova with A 350.
We are changing from long water pump to short water pump, adding a shroud and decent fan.

The imediatly pressing problem is the alternator mount and brackets. Somethings wrong here and I'm not sure what it is. Wrong mix of parts?
Wrong alternator? Or if the parts are fabricated incorrectly and need a complete rework. I got the brackets from summit.

The first issue is the alternator body and the bracket hit, then it's quite apparent that the valve cover will be next.

So what's wrong? Why aren't they lining up?

Are you using the right holes for that bracket? Will it bolt to that other hole in the head maybe?

I had an old 67 GMC with something similar as location goes with my alternator mounting off the side of the exhaust manifold, but I don't ever remember having an adjuster bracket like that which is locked with two bolts onto the block.
    Something seems not right.
Do a search on ebay and see if any brackets have examples of how this should mount.
Wish I could be of more help, its been a while.

  4. I can't tell if you have headers or manifold, as I do. But it looks like the wrong mix of parts. This is my front alternator mounting bracket.

Attaches to the short water pump. Typical GM mount on manifold at alternator base.

  8. Is that for a short water pump?
What's the rest of the brackets look like?

  9. That's what I was trying for:oops:
But something isn't right on my end.

  10. I called, was gonna pull the trigger and they don't have any. 4-6 weeks maybe 12 weeks out.

Yeah, I'd say it's the short upper bracket like Squirrel said. You need the longer one. Or you could go with the universal curved arm and space it to work I suppose.

  12. Does anyone know the year and application for a long bracket vs the short bracket.

  14. Every time I am at a swap meet I end up with 3-4 of those brackets. Just pile them in the locker until there is need.

Are there any self serve wrecking yards around your area that have cars of the appropriate age ?
I like to unbolt these sort of things myself and get all the assorted pieces and a picture or two of how it all fits.

How about a drive out into the country to some farm areas with old cars or a small town ?

  18. If there's any yard within an hours drive that has anything old in it, I don't know about it.

There's nothing wrong with adventure and parts hunting, but I need to get it done.

I still haven't seen a long bracket vs short bracket.

Is the bottom bracket a factory part or an aftermarket bracket for headers?

You can use a 59-60 chevy 283 upper generator bracket, which is longer for your set-up you have pictured. Worked on mine!

  21. After market.
    For headers.

  23. That's for a big block

  24. That's a complete different bracket.

I tried to avoid that one as its being kinda flimsy.

Couldn't you cut the bracket in two, bolt the adjustable end to the alternator where you want it and then fill in the gap with metal?

AFAIK that is the only one available that works with the header bracket you have. Your only option might be to use one and strengthen it to suit.

  27. Sure I could. lol

That's supposed to be a reproduction top bracket. I'd think it would work with the "right" other stuff.
It works fine in the above 327 pic.
Unless it's dimensionally different that bracket should work on this 350 the same.

That looks like the bracket for a BBC.
