Driveshaft driven alternators?????

    Instead of mounting your alternator off the drive shaft just relocate it to to the underside of your engine. Kind of in between your engine and the front crossmember. This way you can still use the fan belt to turn it. I saw this once on a Flathead powered Track T. You really had to look for the alternator to find it. I know this wasn't the best description but I hope it helps. -Jeff

    Some very early cars had starters that would turn into generators once the engine was running. Similarly, my dad had a 1960s vintage Allis-Chalmers garden tractor with a belt driven Delco generator/starter.

    There is a company that sells a water pump with an alternator that's integral to the pulley: http://www.racemate.com/ It's mainly for racing use, so it doesn't have a very high output (32 amps max.)
