  5. That is why everyone should build their own. If you let the shop build one you are going to get the style of the fella that built it. If you build your own it will have your personality and not someone else's.

This is a general statement and not directed at any one in particular.

To use a different example I walked into a show one time when I was working for a builder based magazine. A fella walked up to me and wanted e to look at his car, he said he built it. I aksed if he was sure that he built it and he said yes why do you ask. So I said it looked like a Brizio car, he admited that I was correct. They all look the same.

I wll mention an engine that no one seems to think is worthy of mention if it is a late '40s-'50s style Ford an Olds engine is an excellent choice.

Can't see the rollin bones style with a hemi head sticking out thru the hood sides unless it were an Ardun headed flattie. That'd be the ***s.

  9. I have alwasy been a tall deck Olds man myself, 394 has alwasy been my engine of choice. That said any olds engine from the early Rocket V-8 era would suffice and the center bolt car engines look the part better.

Over the years I have had people look and say maaan is that a 396 or a 427. Really frosts my ***. All they see is perimeter bolts on the rocker covers and then dumb goes into overdrive.

Ha, there is a reason so many fords used to say "Powered by insert your favorite GM mill here " on the deck. :D:D:D

Nice coupe by the way, what size Y block? What ignition is that, the little box on the firewall is an ignition control correct?

I think the "best" one is the one that makes you smile inside everytime you look at it based on your vision of a hotrod. It's like your tastes in beer and women - a personal thing. To me it's as much about the engine accessories as it is the basic block. I like a bunch of two barrel carbs, a Vertex mag, and plain finned valve covers. What do you like? I could see a 365 Caddy, 303 / 324 Olds, early SBC, flathead all working.

Thanks, ******, it's a '56 272. Nothing special... Seems to have NO problem whatsoever hauling this bucket of bolts around as fast as I would ever want to drive it. And it sounds GREAT too. I'm running a Mallory Dual Point with a magspark coil. That box is actually the voltage regulator.

Paul, if you are not in a rush? I have a few more new leads on more Olds stuff. One I am chasing is a 53 or 54 Olds 2dr sedan project car with a factory standard trans. So if 53, it's a 303, or if it's a 54 it would be 324. I might part it out if I get it.

I also might sell the 303 in my 40 coupe, runs ok but has stuck rings. Needs rebuild.

I have 37 Buick topshift transmissions with Olds Rocket gears to fit those bellhousings, too. Might have some core motors coming in as well, maybe a 57/58 371..etc. A lot of J2 stuff as well.

No early Cad motors have turned up so far, in our area.

  13. A voltage reg like for a Mopar? It is a real clean setup.

A lot of people over look the smaller Y block, hell the larger Y blocks are not used as much as they should be eiher. They were strong pulling little engines from the factory. And the lower end was real stout, mounting the crank way above the pan rails like they did makes them real stable.

My '55 Wagon had a 292 in it when I bought it and it just would not quit. I put the even small Y block (around 230 inches I think) out of a '54 coupe in my '62 long bed unibody after I exploded the 6. It ran out well and would pull about any load I ever threw at it.

Good engines and for a traditional rod if you want to be different it is the way to go.

Yea, I put a mopar alt on in preparation for my bonneville trip, saved all the offset generator mounts just in case I get sick of looking at it. It's not bad though, it tucks down in behind the inner fender and it's finned aluminum, I usually run a louvered full hood anyhow.

I got distracted... yea, they are great engines. Lots of speed stuff available too, I'm very happy with it so far, if it gets me to the salt and back with little trouble I'll be thrilled! The one thing to watch out for though is they are not arranged very well to fit in an early car. They are a long engine... Driver's side exhaust, steering, pedals, and oil filter generally want to occupy the same real estate. So they take a little planning, but nothing too crazy.

Anything besides a small block Chevy. Nothing wrong with them, but I've just seen too many. I always stop and look at a car that has a motor that isn't "just another SBC".

  17. love a hemi, but gotta agree with ya on the hem, OJ.... hanging out of the sides of the Rolling bones fords....goes against the nasty clean looking nose they sport....

for the record, the car they drove to la roadster show from their shop a few years ago was running a Y block ford in it....don't remember which one:confused:...i do remember it ran plenty strong....they had also just done the mile at i think Maxon??posted a respectable time .. i do remember it drove strong and rode very nicely...they stopped and stayed at the motel in okc that i was at when i was there for work training...took a lil cruise in it and then we hung out and ate fat okc style steaks and drank plentyy of liquor:eek:
nice guys...sweet books they was promo that year too...picked one up from em...bad *** ford;).....
