I have 35 wishbones and a model a drop axle I got in a package deal. Obviously the axle is 1/4 too big. Is grinding the model a axle down to 2" an acceptable way of doing this?

Machining would be better for a nice flat surface when it gets tightened down 37-40 bones are wider also

    It can be done ,
Grind close to Desired thickness ,
Just grind 1 side on each side.
Then use Dial calipers & lay out die,
    Finish with file ,

It really depends on what car you are going to use the axle in . It may not be the right width for a fendered 35... using a complete wishbone.... Model A axle is 1/8" wider than a 35 axle and the perches are slightly different spacing too, or is the wishbone already split ? the finished width (king pin to kingpin ) often changes with dropping ... You may be better off finding Model A bones or wishbone .. If I were going to modify the axle I would mill it with a piloted counterbore/facing tool to be 100% sure it is square to the perch bolt hole.

Do it the easy way and grind a 1/16" off each mounting surface and dress it with a file.

I'd swap or sell the Model A axle to get the right one.

^^^ Four of them make a quarter. You should have no problem swapping the 2" for 2 1/4 bones, this will give you the best results if the proper machine work isn't available.

0.0625” off of the top of the beam
0.0625" off of the bottom of the beam.
0.0625" off of the top inside of the bone.
0.0625" off of the bottom inside of the bone.
    Equals 0.250".
Mill down the axle and open up the bone.

Why open up the bone unless there isn't enough meat above and below the lines of the axle top and bottom to take 1/8 off each side?
I'm not too well versed on this but cutting away the insides of the ends of the bones doesn't seem to be the best way to accomplish the mission.

I'd cut on the bones before I'd cut the axle.

Just spit balling, the ends are forged, why not heat them up and spread them out enough to get over the axle, and while they are still cherry red put the purch bolt threw and tighten it up, maybe re-heat them once. when it cools it should be a nice snug fit....right?
