I NEED INFO ON DROPPING AXLES:eek: Ok everybody, I've read all the tech articles in the archives from ***us and those guys, but I havent gotten enough info to feel comfortable doing it. I have a 60 Ford truck axle that I would like to drop 3-4 inches and if anyone has done these, please share. I would definitely like to see some more jigs for dropping axles and more info on how to do it properly. THANK YOU in advance!:D

I want to see this too.
***us' posts left me with a lot of unanswered questions
I am working on a 60 Ford pickup too

  3. Talk to Elpalcko here on the HAMB. He has done a few but they are very hard todo compared to regular hot rod axle.

I don't even mess with them.. Your best bet is to get it done by someone else... By the time you build a jig and figure it all out for that axle... you would be ahead in money and time and driving your truck.. They are diff. than the 28-48 axles... Jason

Not the first time I've heard that. I would contact Joe at http://www.joesspeedshop.com/ , if he can't do it he will tell who can. He does good work and is a really good guy.

C'Mon somebody knows how to do these and is willing to share the info right? I have access to what is practically a machine shop and all the tooling and a machinist and toolmaker with 30+ years of experience. More interested in doing it myself than paying someone 200 bucks and the shipping on one of these heavy things.

Its not a matter of having a machine shop. Its mostly a matter of having some heavy steel a fairly hot welder and some imagination.
There’s plenty of info on the ***us thread to pull it off.
Sorry but im not showing how I do mine. The cash I make off them is how I can afford to play with cars.

Drop an axle? Easy!! Just crate it up and ship it somewhere with one of those funkadelic shippers mentioned in that other thread. The axle will get dropped for sure.

(Sorry, been one of those days.....................)

Piece of cake, anyone can do it and I recommend EVERYONE get in the axle dropping business. Then that pesky shipping cost will be a thing of the past. Now, with that behind us keep the "do it yourself" theme going and build a foundry and cast your own blocks and heads, it CAN'T be that hard. Then set up a forging space in your shop and save a lot of $$$$'s on cranks and suspension pieces. Hell, while your at it go out in the back yard and mine some iron ore and do the whole spectrum of metalurgy.
Hot rodding is a "do it yourself" deal, right. Get your *** in gear start with your ambition and create everything needed to build one. Be sure to do a post sharing everything you found out so the rest of us can benefit.
BTW, better plant some rubber trees (don't get tricked into those radial tire trees) and raise some cattle (you don't use the hide of those Naugas for your interior do you? Then there is that matter of copper for the wire..................................your going to be a busy boy. Did I mention gl***? No problem, you've got some sand don't you?

^^^^^ SMART *** MOTHERF****R!^^^^^ Not the type of ******** response I need. Ive been doing steel fab and ironwork as well as an automotive technician for 8 years now and I'm damn good at it:D so if this is what the HAMB is all about then whatever. Everybody just likes to keep everything a big secret so they can make money.

  12. There was an article in Rod and Custom, I think a few months back that showed Adam Young's dropping jig. They dropped it right side up over a formed piece of thick steel. Looked neat.

That sounds like a good way to do one, then you would KNOW you have the same dimensions side to side. Im gonna see if I can find that article!

Yep thats the kind of trick I was looking for, with the truck axles already dropped, you would have to have something to keep the bend correct and i just wasnt thinking in the right direction but that hits the nail on the head.
