Well as I have started my build thread I guess I need to Start asking some questions, and I know nothing about dropped axle setups...I was always set on mustang 11 suspension, but the more I learn the more I appreciate the traditional.
I have searched the forum but with not much luck on info, plus I'm not that good with computers. So what I'm asking... is their any sites/books or any other info were I can learn about all the components and how everything works. I know this is such a basic question but who better to ask :)

It's a 38 Ford panel truck by the way.

Go to Pete & Jakes website. They have good tech sheets/pages that have diagrams and explanations.

  3. I'll bet Tardel and Biships book will have a world of easy to understand info on Ford axles.

From 1935 on the suspension is well hidden on Fords, so I would feel ok on any choice of front suspension. Split or unsplit wishbone with a dropped original Ford axle would always be my first choice on a 1934 or older car, but I have one early Ford with a four bar and aftermarket 4" dropped axle and it rides well. I have a newer car with a mustang II spec suspension and it is much nicer riding. Your choice. look at Speedway catalog for info as well. Several here on HAMB can drop your original axle if you want. I have had two dropped by Bear Metal Kustoms, and am satisfied

To fit a later and usually larger transmission, which gets in the way of the x-member centre and /or wishbone ball socket. Kits from several shops allow you to separate the bones on 35 and later ch***is only enough to clear the centre. Ch***is eng. etc. Once again, their websites should have pics and there have been many posts on here showing this (have fun with the search function!)

Splitting the bones was done when you were using different engines and transmissions to gain clearance.

This is my truck frame with split bones. HRP
