Hello Specialists My name is Josef and I live in Munich / Germany. I have a 30 Ford Coupe. I have dropped the original axle by 3 inches and streched it. Unfortunately, I come with the original top screwed steering arms only with difficulty under the Wishbones. I think other spindles with steering arms forged on the bottom would be the better choice, so I do not have to bend the arms so far. I want to keep the original axle and the mechanical brake, the brake floater kit works very well. What spindles would fit best with my original dropped axle with mechanical brakes? 32-34 ?? Maybe there are some aftermarket parts or kits ? Many thanks from Munich !! With best regards Josef
Try putting the tie rod over the wishbone. You might have to redrill the tapered hole half way down from the top. and also heat and bend the steering arms.
'32-'34 would be a good choice; anything later would not be compatible with your Model A hubs. I' ve seen A spindles used with the arms twisted 180° to put the balls down, lowering the tie rod, still over the wishbones; but clearing the frame.
Here's a picture from an old HAMB post. Dropped axle (aftermarket; but makes no difference) with modified A spindles with the steering arm ball down along with a curved extension on the brake actuator to clear the drag link.
You could try and using a 46-48 wishbone and cutting off the spring hangers and shorten it to the Model A lenght and weld the Model A wishbone rear half and use it or maybe dropped tie rod ends.
Hello, first of all many thanks for all the information. I had forgotten that I have installed a leaf spring with reverse eyes. With all the modifications hit the tie rod to the front crossmember, as Hitchhiker has already written. The arms are already twisted 180° to put the balls down, as Rich B has already written. I think I will have to use different spindles, has anyone used the 32-34 spindles with an original dropped axle? Do I need there other King Pins, or fit the originals? need King Pins with the inclusion of the mechanical brake in any case. I make today still a few photos. Thanks to all !!! Here's another picture from a HAMB thread. '32-'34 spindles and mechanical brakes. No reason you couldn't ream the eyes 1/2 way up from the bottom and heat and bend the arms to get the tie rod under the wishbone.
For ‘32-‘34 spindles you will need to use your Model A king pins, they have a different angle compared to the early V8 k/p’s. If the later k/p’s are used your brake actuators will be angled up higher. Even with your Model A king pins you will need to fabricate an extension from the actuators to the spring perches.
