I have a '54 chevy Bel Air with a stock 235 engine and powerglide. It has a set of Fenton headers. Love the sound of the Chevy six. I want to add a set of dual carbs. Looking for some input. 1. I have a matched set of Carter W1 574 carbs, need rebuild. The carbs have an attach bolt pattern for a 216 engine. I'll need to locate a dual intake manifold that will fit the carbs bolt pattern and install them on the 235. Will a 216 intake manifold work on the 235? or 2. Locate and install a set carbs for a 235 and intake manifold for a 235 and install them on the 235. Like I said looking for some input. The car is not fast and the carbs will not make it faster. I want the look of the dual carbs.
The 216 intake will work but you will need to buy "stepped" intake rings and aftermarket exhaust manifolds since the stock 235 exhaust manifold will not fit the 216 intake. Here's a place that sells the adapter rings. Click on link below http://www.marshallsince62.com/id12.html
dual intake from a 216 will work if you use the step rings as stated before, I took my Thicksun to a machine shop with my old intake and had them open the ports to accept the larger 235 intake rings. Didn't cost that much and worked really well. [/IMG]
I live in the northwest. Heading to the Portland Swap Meet on April 4th, 5th, and 6th. Looking for a dual intake manifold. Already have Fenton dual exhaust. Talked with Patrick in Arizona. He told me not to use the dual intake for a 216 engine. Advised me to use a dual intake for a 235 engine. I have the set of Carter W1 and the W1 will fit the 216 intake manifold without and modification. Heard those carbs are easy to sync. Still looking for the right setup.
Plug one stud hole on the 235 manifold and then drill and tap to the 216 pattern. Or get backwoods and enlongate the mounting hole on the carb base.
OK, I can either modily the mounting holes on either the carbs or the manifold. Anybody running the Carter W1 carbs? What do you think of the Carter W1 carbs?
W-1 's are good carbs, beat the hell out of Rochester B's .No fiddly power valve ,just a nice metering rod system. Ran a pair of them on a warmed up 153CID Chevy II in my T. Be advised those carbs are more complicated than you would think from first glance.Lots of little jets etc hiding down deep holes.
i run a pair of 216 rochesters with a offy intake for a 216 on my 235. i ground the intake so to fit the 235 rings and it worked great. also running split headers. never used the carters but im sure youll be happy with dual carbs and dual exhaust.
