Alaskan hunter was attacked by grizzly on remote trail

WASILLA, Alaska, Sept. 26 — A hunter attacked by a grizzly bear on a remote trail said he used duct tape to bind his bite wounds, then rode an all-terrain vehicle to his pickup truck and drove himself to a hospital.

BILL MURPHY said the Sept. 17 attack happened after he surprised a grizzly cub and its mother on a trail about 50 miles northeast of Anchorage where he was hunting for moose and sheep.
“I didn’t even have time to jump,” Murphy said.
Murphy grabbed his rifle but before he could raise it, the mother bear pinned him face-down.
It then clamped her jaws around his right shoulder and started shaking him like a rag. He said he felt teeth pressing against his skin, then a pop as they sliced through.
At some point, the bear let go, then stood over Murphy, panting and drooling onto his head. All he could think about was a bear attack over the summer near the Russian River where a man was bitten on the face and blinded.
“I just lay perfectly still and said, ’God, don’t bite my head,”’ Murphy said.
Finally, the bear moved away. Murphy said he got up, planning to shoot the bear, but it had broken his rifle.
Murphy said he wrapped duct tape around his shoulder and cut up a cloth bag to wrap around his thigh. He hiked out to his four-wheeler, rode about 15 miles back to his pickup truck and drove a half hour to Valley Hospital in Palmer.
The 54-year-old said he has no idea how long the attack lasted, but it felt like “two lifetimes.”
“I can laugh about it now, but I wasn’t laughing then,” he said.

Moose are STOOPID, you can usually shoot them from the truck. [IMG] (Still gotta cut it up to load it without help tho.)
He was probably looking for a place to scan for sheep when he got nailed. I always carry duct tape when hunting. The O.D. Green stuff, not the silver. I taped an axe cut closed in a dip****'s leg once so he could make it to the hospital. Used it to patch holes in tents, to make tents out of plastic sheet, to tape stuff to a packframe, lots of things. Stuff's almost as handy as a ****** that can cook! [IMG]

Duct tape is one of the three essential tools:

    1 - Big ****ing Hammer
    2 - WD-40
    3 - Duct Tape

Hammer to "fix" things. For everything else that doesn't move, but should, use the WD-40. For stuff that shouldn't move, but does, use the duct tape!

Duct tape is also in the top 3 tools that vanish from your shop when you need them. Right behind the 1/2 and 9/16 wrenches and just in front of the cordless drill.

I'm kinda in the middle here. On the one side, I hate to see anyone get hurt. On the other side, I'm kinda with the bear, I don't like those noisy friggin four wheelers in the woods either.

When you hunt in bear country you takes yer chances. I'd much rather be mauled by a bear than run down by a ***** moose.

This is a much better story that the last thing I read about duct tape useage today. Ya know the kid who died because his folks and babysitter duct taped him from head to toe for stealing biscuits. All involved have convicted of murder facing life sentences at least.
