I allways thought the reason you guys run those SBC 's was because the parts were so cheap --( you can always find one broke down on the side of any road to use parts off of ) and possibly because they are much shorter so to easily fit into the 30's style cars without stretching the front end. A SBF is a good 4 to 6 inches longer and almost impossible without a good torch to squeeze into an oldie and keep the rest of the body intact. A SBC with the old style short water pump is a much easier fit and yes with all kidding aside still runs great! I am of the school that as long as you are running a combination from the "big three" then you are alright. They all have their strong and weak points.
I also was reading waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy back up here somewhere where the nitro comment was made about the 60's ----I could be mistaken , but think the guy was talking of nitromethane ---not nitrous oxide ---that is a WHOLE DIFFERENT BALL OF WAX !! Yes my ride has some juice on it too --in the bottle that is , but it runs like stink without it --just gets faster with it --Got a 605 stroker BBF and a 1190 BG carb -roller and lots more goodies -no it isn't in an oldie , but no matter it runs great with or without the bottle -- I do really enjoy the reading here and it seems to be a great bunch of people here -I hope i don't get too bashed for what I have said --but it's just talk afterall isn't it ?

Why is that a "problem"? A 350 will make more power than a 265, given the same parts. I thought hot rods were about going fast?

    My big question is this:

Why are there so many damn elitists in all sectors of the classic car hobby (traditional hot rodders, restorers, muscle car guys, street rodders, etc)? Why do so many thumb thier noses at cars for not being "traditional" enough, "correct" enough, etc? Why can't people appreciate the hard work of others and recognize that not everyone wants to build the car that YOU want to build?

I'll admit that I have a real bias against checkbook rodders that farm out the work, so I guess I am as guilty as anyone. That is what drew me to this place.... you guys actually get dirty hands and busted knuckles! :D (Plus, I have a real love for early hot rods, ever since sanding dad's 40 Chev at age 8).

You guys have turned this into a whining, pansy thread! Ask stuff like, what are bellflowers, what do radirs look like, what how do I post pictures, how do you get to be a tech editor, etc. Not, (whining voice) how come you guys make fun of my SBC? They're engines too.....they have needs to be started just like other engines. boo hoo hoo.... If you like SBC's run em'....who cares what others think...

Who cares about the double standards in different car sections? That's what makes it fun. Maybe we should get the ricers, vetters, muscle car, and rat rod owners together for one BIG hug!

someone please shut this down.......the drama creators have invaded!

  11. Shoeboxes - 49-51 Fords - are somewhat round when viewed from today's perspective.

Viewed from the perspective of the late 40's early, 50's, when the 49 waltzed into the sunlight it was way square compared to the round and somewhat bulbous - but still beautiful - 48 Fords.
I think the name emanated from the Ford design team to an extent, seems like I read that somewhere, but don't remember which book it was in.

The - new at the time - 49 Studebakers, especially the long deck Starlite Coupe was thought to look backwards when going down the highway.
People made fun of them, but they never did get a catchy name.

As far as what do you call a highboy when it has bobbed rear and cycle front fenders?
Darned if I know, but if it's fun that's all that counts....:D

    Why?
    When is it gonna end?
    Will it be soon?
    Can I go home now?

  13. Remember the type? The groupies that blindly followed the block bully around, pinching, kicking, and gouging, the little kids. There are a few, (a minority, thank God) HAMBrs that take the attitude that Newbie is a state of mind (dumb? Ignorant? Pledge?) I don't know, but certainly of lower social status, to be demeaned by 'old skool' HAMBrs. They do this (demean Newbies), because they didn't have a life, need somebody to kick around.

Your Introduction to the thread implies that newbies ask dumb questions. There is a million sayings related to that, but it boils down to this; anybody that thinks any question is dumb, demeans anybody's question, that guy is an asshole, pure in simple. (I don't think you intended that), but the opening statement falls into the trap already established by some pricks on HAMB.

As far as cutoff dates, (some) Traditional Hot Rodders think they hold a patent on deciding what's cool and what-snot, following the attitude, In general, prevelent throughout the evolution of the old car hobby where a particular group, sometimes a club, gets together and gathers membership in a certain line of thinking. Exclusion in any social circle is because of a fear of competition After they've got things to fit their whims, Then they circle the wagons because they don't want, are actually afraid, (sometimes) of outside competetion. It's called 'the group instinct', in anthropology.

Take an example; A HAMBr builds, with modern technology, a flat-head Ford motor with improved lubrication, modern cooling system, carbureted or supercharged, dressed up to HIS liking. He departs from what was traditional 'in the day' and puts it on a Zd frame with new-technology H-bars, rebuilds the spring perchs, uses after-market production springs, mounts modern shocks, etc., and spends $20,000-$30,000 doing it. Then he insists it is 'traditional'.

Another guy takes a stock 30's coupe, chops the top, and mounts a crate motor with headers and a pair of 4-barrell Hollys, with AC, and aftermarket juice brakes/dropped axle 'system'. Everything else on the car is basically stock, a Hi-boy, with glossy paint and custom interior. Then the HAMBR that built his 'traditional' calls the latter guy a 'goldchainer', or 'daddy warbucks', whether or not he knows the guy did the work himself or paid to have it done. I say he's one of those that's afraid of the competetion, a bully groupie.

Another example, there is a club that calls themselves "Classic yatta.yatta. big bucks, fancy-Dan, etc,etc....." They claim, by their own decree, that if it isn't in their by-laws it isn't a 'true' classic. That's cool, as long as it's within the boundaries of their little circle. But when they push on people outside that circle, like when they get their nose out of joint if I call my classic 1902 Chevrolet 490 a classic at a car show that allows the owner to pick what class his car is in, THEN, it's because they are afraid of the competetion.

I drive to three big shows (multi-day) a year, none of them exclude anybody. Pay the entry fee, you are welcome. I go to the "exclusives" also, just for the fun. I don't mind parking next to anything, nobody's car threatens my existence.

Then (of course!) there are the Majority, that are civil in their treatment of newcomers to the HAMB.

Oh yeah I forgot. I'm putting a sbc in my 46 FORD.

#1 Frame was set up for it.
#2 I got it for free.
    #3 It's a 283.
#4 I got some of those really cool Chevrolet Script valve covers and a neato Offy intake with a front oil filler tube. I painted it blue though. It's not Ford blue but old GM blue.
    #5 It's mine.

I am pretty sure that in order to work at an Auto Zone you must own a 76 Camaro. I bought a 57 chebby station wagon, the guy who owned it before me put IROC wheels on it. I drove to an Auto Zone cuz I needed a new fuel pump. The guys working the counter (one owns a 76 Camaro, the other guy is "restoring" a Firebird) commented on my "nice wheels", nuttin said about the car, they wanted the wheels!!!! I traded the IROCS for some flat black steelies.......... SUCKERS!!!!!!!!

Why is it that a guy who started with a Model A in 1960 and built it using all modern 1960 speed equipment is cool, but a guy who starts with a Model A in 2006 and builds it with all 2006 speed equipment doesn’t “get it”?

o.k. I've got one. Why is it that when some people "z" there frames in the rear they go down to 2x3 tubing instead of staying with 2x4 tubing?
Is it for weight, looks, or that's what a model A crossmember fits into better?
