Question #3: If I would get some sort of NAAAAWwWWWSSSS system and actually install it on an engine, how long would that engine (stocker ford 302 for instance) last before I blew the shit out of it, put out a pedestrian's eye, and get arrested for doing monster burnouts on "the bottle" down at the local Wal Mart? a buddy of mine threw together a 79 mustang to race......junk yard 302 roller motor ...with a edelbrock intake and a 650 double pumper.....used a 2800 convertor....and i want to say maybe 3.50 ish gears.....had a 175 shot of juice on it.....off the bottle the car was good for 13.40's .......leaving with the spray ....and shooting the car the whole pass ....it ran 11.50's........went from 1.90 60' to a 1.52.........and was running almost 120 mph......was also getting the left front up about a foot........it was a pretty impressive sight.......he wanted to do a 2 stage deal with a 125 thrown on ....but sold the car before he could try it.....brandon
Maybe a two stage system will be in my future.. a little off the line and a bigger dose when you get rolling..[/QUOTE] might check into one of those progressive timers......seems to be a pretty good setup for street strip stuff......brandon
Here is my take on the original post... I wouldn't run more than a 150 shot on a stock 302 block but that's because I've seen a few come apart due to power adders. I'm sure you might be able to get away w/ 200+ for a while but you risk dumping 5 qts of oil and 2 gallons of antifreeze under the rear tires when the block comes apart. For this application I'd check out the midwest mustang association forum or something like it. Lots of people spraying 302's out there. My personal experience: It is a rare case when a car w/ a stock cast piston can handle more than a 200 shot for any lenght of time. I have, however, seen a motor w/ the old HEAVY domed TRW's take a 250 shot until the timing didn't get pulled out on a run. From what we could tell the detonation cause the main calps to bounce/walk and then the crank broke. As with any combo, especially a power adder, deotnation is like kryptonite. Oh yea...one more thing..... NAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWS (shoot me now) 2t
hillbillyhell, thanks for your post. NOS is the brand name of one of the first aftermarket manufacturers of nitrous oxide kits (Nitrous Oxide Systems). The Fast & the Furious, one of the most ignorant movies EVER made, has every ricer kid saying NOS. Amazing how an ignorant movie can make so many other people ignorant as well.
The chemical compound for nitrous oxide is N2O, not NO2. It is also known as dinitrogen oxide and dinitrogen monoxide. As someone else has mentioned, it doesn't burn, but increases the amount of oxygen in the combustion chamber, allowing more fuel to be burned and more power to be made. Kind of like a supercharger in a bottle. Some kid was killed here in Arkansas a couple of years ago while street racing and nitrous was in one of the cars. The state trooper who investigated said nitrous contributed to the accident (?). So the state legislature passed a law banning the use of nitrous on the street. You can have a nitrous system on your car, but when it's on public roadways, the bottle has to be disconnected.
