dumb shaved door question

  1. Drive the 4 hours to me and I'll do it for you. I'm in Windsor Ont, across bridge from Detroit Mi.

I live in Cincinnati and you can use my oxy-acetylene setup if you drive down here and wanna do it in my garage. I'm kinda weird about using compressed gas tanks that have sat in the back of the truck for a couple hours, so I'm not gonna head up there. I'll warn you, though - I'm a BEGINNER welder and have spent more time reading about it/watching videos than actually welding. I'm working on changing those ratios, though...

There you go creepy... lots of cool people offering to help you do it right. POWER OF THE HAMB

  5. This offer is open to all. I know there are a lot of members in the Detroit MI area. Come on over where your dollar goes further, I'll even show you around our stinky little city (we do have a Casino where your winnings are tax free).

I also have a Bridgeport machine in my home shop to mill anything up you might need and am working on getting a lathe soon. Besides, Canadian beer is plenty good.

I think the hardest part of shaved door handles is remembering to get your keys out of the ignition in the garage or rolling a window down at the gas station , ha ha. Before you get them handles welded up install a emergency release of somesort.

  8. Sounds like you have it under control now, but I'm gonna go ahead and answer your question with regards to the JB Weld type thing. Yes...you can do it. YES...it WILL work. AntiChrysler had to do it on his car. He wanted his antenae shaved (I'm not gonna get into WHY it wasn't shaved prior to paint) The car was already painted black with blue pearl. This meant welding up the hole and grinding it smooth woulda wrecked a BIG area which woulda been hard/impossible to hide/fix. We filled the hole with a patch (washer) and 5 Minute Steel. Sanded, primed, sprayed the black. We layed out the flames he wanted added to the car and I made sure to carefully lay a lick of flames over the freshly shaved area. I saw the car after about 2 years of HEAVY drive time...no signs of cracking or anything. In a perfect world, you weld. In my world, you do what you can.

Like barnett said, you can do whatever you need to. What your concern will be is the amount of epoxy used (thickness, sq inches). The expansion/contraction rate of the epoxy will differ from the steel. That's where your future problems with final fillers will come from. If you could mechanically attach your pieces with temporary screws then leading them in becomes an answer (also said above). The last but nasty way of doing it is with mapp gas and brazing rod. I think the heat required to get the brass to "run" would warp the shit outta the doors tho.

I also feel it'd be best to wait until a welding solution is found, but it's just the best way to skin your cat.
