I had my 39 Chevy at a show when two small kids climbed on the running boards and hung on the door to look at the inside, I didn't yell, but asked them not to hang on the car and please step off the running boards,The mother than said to me rather nasty "Whats the problem its just an OLD CAR!"
I have had people come up to my car at shows and open the doors or the hood and look at me like I have a problem when I say  "HEY don't do that!"

Here's where the new guy gets to be Mr. Popularity.

How about some of the stupid shit you get from the gold chain smoothie billet street rod crew? I used to try talking to those guys, before I learned most of them don't know dick about their own cars.

"Yeah son, it's all real steel, one of only "X" left in the world"
(Right, Pops. Guess you went to a lot of trouble to make it look like a glass body on the inside)

"I've got over $100,000 in this car"
(did you get your money's worth?")

"Gonna be featured in Hot Rod magazine next month"
    (Car disappeared without a trace)

"Boyd Coddington wanted to build it for me, but I told him I could do better myself"
    (Wow)

    "I built it myself"
    (Uh, yeah you did)

Then there's the guys who got some semi-desirable car rotting away in the yard / garage / barn / whatever - been there for 10 or 15 years.

Q: What're you gonna do with that 'XX Xxxxx? Wanna sell it?
A: Naw, we gonna fix it up!!!
(Better get on it, brother. You ain't getting any younger)

"So what year Chrysler is that?"
"It's not a Chrysler, it's a flathead with Ardun heads"
    "What?"
"Ardun heads, the guy who inspired the Corvette designed and built them"
"You wiseass kid, don't try to bullshit me!"

While working on my '40 Chevy P/U one day.
Me: Hey! Put your foot on the brake pedel so I can break lose the lug nuts on the raised front wheels.
    Buddy: OK.
Another buddy: Just put the emergency brake on.
    Me & Buddy: Laugh!!!
Another buddy: You don't need to hold the brake pedel if you use the E brake.
Me & Buddy: Laugh again, real hard this time because we think Another buddy is kidding!
Another buddy: Insist all we need to do is use the E brake and goes to apply it but to his surprise the e brake does not hold the front brakes. His quote "if it wasn't a rod it would have worked"!
It's a good source of laughter still to this day for us.

Just last week a guy and his buddy were looking at my motor as I was standing close by and heard them saying how nice the Caddy valve covers fit on the 350 Chevy! Um, it is a Caddy motor!
And my favorites are "nice rat rod" and "why do have those pinstripes on the car before you painted it"!

i had built a t bucket once and took it to an alignment shop. the expert meckanick told me it couldn't be aligned because there was to much backyard building and not enough real engineering with the front end. it was just a regular dropped axle.
when it comes to stupid questions you should drive a henry j gasser like me.
how fast is it? that must be hard to drive with that straight axle.
what is it? studebacker, vw, volvo, ford, chevy, datsun, mustang you name it i have been asked it.
it would take a whole page to tell it all.

Every time I'm anywhere with my '35 tudor slantback I get "....nice Vicky!!". Quite often I hear "is that a Plymouth????". They always think it's a Plymouth, I haven't begun to figure that one out yet.

At Bob's Big Boy one Friday night a guy says to his buddy..." this is a '37 because it doesn't have the door hinges sticking out". ( I put hidden hinges on it 5 years ago)

Overheard a guy while looking at my '60 Thunderbird Coupe tell his friend "that has one of those tops that fold down into the trunk"!!!
    Could be an honest mistake....maybe?

I found out this weekend that the Jaguar wire wheels on my Buick are in reality Lincoln wires. Wow, I'm glad I was told, I would have never known. I had fun standing between my car and Caddyman65's Rivullac and hearing the talk.

I had a kid open my car and get in , he started yanking the shifter and turning the wheel. I walked over and said get out of my car, the parents where just standing there watching? WTF? In my childhood days if I had done something like that my dad would have beat my ass in front of GOD and everybody! This "NEW" style of teaching children how to act don't f--ing work. Whoop that ass....worked for me!

ok.. In defense of those who "know" no better.. we all have our areas of expertise'. Some may have their expertise in old cars, some in milking cows, some in plumbing, some in computers, some in hardware, some in software, some in DOS, some in Oracle, and some may still be looking for it.
I guess the point is we aren't born knowing what a Duece coupe is, or an external join between databases by a primary key.
It's easy to sit back and laugh at someone, but it's 100 times more fun to teach someone about something that interests them (or they wouldn't have said "stooopid" crap in the first place).
I'm sure there have been times when I have been the statue and times when I've been the pigeon.....

White64, I see what your saying , this is what my dad told me when I was young, " stand there and make them think your stupid, instead of opening your mouth and letting them know you are" gee dad......that really helped me . hahaha

Along those lines....The people are divided up between "car" & "non car" people. The non car people, like the lady who said "It's just an old car". Are the ones who'll support scapping bills & other stuff to "Save the world" or "reduce dependence on foriegn oil". Us car people need to stick together regardless of intrests, Track T, S10, or dusters. As someone once said, either we hang together, or we'll all hang seperatly. Do we want to be driving this?
