Hoping someone can give me some insight as to what valve springs to order for my 283 build. We are hoping to go with the 097 Duntov can with solid lifters and original power pack heads but am confused about what lift valve springs to order. They seems to range from .450 to .550 lift. Which ones would be best in this application? Thanks, TR
I used just plain old Z28 replacement valve springs in the heads on my 283 with 097 cam in it. works great and didnt need any additional machine work to put in. i get no valve float, and i have repeatedly taken it to 7000 rpms on .y 10.0 to 1 283. these are the ones i used when i built my heads. Yeap just the original spec z28 type springs will go to 7000 plus . OR Comp Cams 981 springs also are very close as I recall . check first . I think I used last time on my 30-30 cam COMP Cams 981-16 COMP Cams Valve Springs | Summit Racing
All the SBC’s used the same valve spring, even the high-perf engines. The so called Z28 spring is the over the counter 3927142 spring designed for the 3927140 “off-road” cam. Easily identified by their brown paint they had a higher pressure on the seat as well as at full lift. The ‘142’s have a seat pressure of 110#, as compared to stock Chevy springs at 80#. Aftermarket vendors sell what they call Z28 springs, I guess those have the higher pressure of the ‘142’s at their installed height of 1.70”. The ‘142’s have been long since discontinued. Bottom line? If you have stock Chevy springs that check at 80# at the 1.70 installed height use them, the gentle action of factory GM cams are all they need.
