I searched and couldnt find an exact answer to my question. Who out there has used the Duplicolor Paint Shop products? like in the link below. I looking to start some of my painting soon. and from what i can tell they have some nice colors and they seem to be reasonably priced. So do you like the paint? do you hate the paint? why? is there another paint product you recomend? this will be my first rodeo with painting. Thanks for the help. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/psFinishSystem/
I dont know anything about the paint..... but they stole the cars logo I would spend the money on name brand material..... PPG or HOK (House of Kolor)
I did a non-HAMB friendly car last winter, and the owner had bought a qt of black when he painted his dash(which I redid)....not much to say other than it's lacquer. Prep for lacquer, and you'll be happy.
It really depend on your idea of what the end product should be.If looking for cheap it's a thin covering paint. So in the end it's not cheaper. IMHO For a better price I use kicker and it looks pretty good. And I like dupont the high end ones are good.
That system is a lacquer. Lacquer is pretty user friendly in that it flashes off quickly (less bugs in your paint) it has no pot life and has no recoat window. I'm pretty sure that there are no isocyanates in it either so that makes it much more user friendly from a safety/fumes aspect. You can also cut and buff it if your paint job doesn't come out so good, providing you put down enough coats. If you're looking at a metallic, consider using their clear as a topcoat because you will rarely get a cut and buffed metallic lacquer to look uniform. Ok, that was the good part. Lacquers simply don't have the durability of a 2k base/clear or single stage urethane. These products are more UV stable and just have a tougher film so they resist degrading from sun, wind, rain and other fallout. I think every 2k system uses isocyanates now. It's dangerous stuff and should be sprayed with an air-suppplied respirator, although you can cheat and use a cartridge mask thats rated for iso's with a pretty stringent change out schedule. The problem with the iso's is that you can't tell when you are over exposed to them and I have been told that even though you are not experiencing any ill effects after using it, the next time you use it you may have a severe reaction. To sum it up, the Duplicolor system is a good DIY/ backyard painting system but the newer generation of catylized paints, whether they be base/clear or single stage is the way to go.
Yeah, lacquer, I just want to add to all the other responses, that it comes pre-thinned. So you're only getting half the paint you think. ALso with lacquer, it is sensitive to humidity, so don't spray it on a damp day, unless you use a retarder. Which brings up.....how do they thin it? Back in the day, there were 3 or 4 different temperature range thinners for lacquer. It was pretty important to use the right one, so it would dry quickly, and not get solvent pop (putting on coats too quickly). Buying it pre-thinned you don't know what temp range it is best for. I'd just go out and buy quality, unthinned lacquer if I had my way.
This is what many people fail to realize. You can get a much better product for about the same cost, you just have to mix it. Which is super easy.
there was a LONG write up about how the Duplicolor system does NOT hold up to gas & other daily chemicals,i'll look & see if i locate it--chuck
