CA is absolutely insane to build, and I will never do it again, but I could see myself moving out of state if it doesn't get any better. My wife likes it where we are. I only have $120k to get most of my mortgage out of the way, but without working it's getting tough. Still, I'm determined to get my dream. If I need to sell my current home I will have plenty of cash to do whatever I want at my lake property, but trying not to do that for my wife's sake.

The prices out here are very scary, but luckily I bought my property 25 years ago...it was a lot more affordable then. Not many people wanted to live in Lake County at that time, it was between real estate booms, after the Loma Prieta earthquake and just before the next boom in the early 2000s. Your place is amazing! I'm watching along with envy...that is HUGE! You and your wife have to be peeing in your pants right about now, it's real, and it's happening for you guys! Grab that gold ring!:)

Ran down at lunch to meet the electrician. Roof is done and the guttering is on. No down spouts yet, but I saw them in the trailer, so maybe tomorrow.

looks like they are getting ready to start in the porch as well.

The electricians are getting me temporary power. They mounted the boxes for the disconnects and the whole house generator transfer switch. No pics, because their truck was in the way.

  4. This is awesome! Will definitely be watching this. I'm only in my late 30s but when my wife and I got married I had dreamed up the idea of a 40x80 now called barndo but then everyone thought I was nuts including my wife HAHA We bought a regular home but now that the barndos have become popular the banks are much easier to deal with plus my wife thinks they are great now*face palm* I still have the plan to build one if I can ever find the land here in Alabama where I want and how I want(mainly what I can afford :D)

Looking great and looking forward to following along

Took mom and dad out to see the progress. Mama Root doesn’t like her pic being taken. She is super excited about it.

    Progress on the porch…
Still waiting on guttering and trim. I saw the garage doors on the trailer, so those should be soon.

Nice wide roof covering the porch. That will be a great place to hang out at . It will also help cool the air coming into Your home if You want to open the windows on nice days .

@Roothawg what's going on, I was expecting to see a car lift going in today! :)

Progress is slower on my end, but not entirely sure where the shop is at. May head up on Sat. I just found an old propane tank I'm going to build a smoker out of. Speaking of which, that porch looks like it's ready for a smoker or grill.;)

How much shop and living space do you have? That thing is HUGE! More power to 'ya!

The building is 50’x120’. So 35’ is house and another 15’ is mama’s garage. There will be 1725’ downstairs and 550’ upstairs, not counting the upholstery shop and my office for Dust Bowl Speed Shop. All in all there will be about 2250 sf of house and maybe 5000 sf of shop if you count the upstairs.

Here are a few update pics from today.
We have 2 out of 3 doors up and the gutter downspouts are on. Started the guttering on the porch. Still have some trim to finish out. They picked up a ton of trash and scrap today. Looks like they will be gone by Friday. We are still waiting on the small garage door to come in. The electrical panel is 85% done. Contractors wear me slick. Why not finish a job and then go to the next site? IMG_3907.jpeg IMG_3903.jpeg IMG_3904.jpeg

They spread themselves thin across several jobs . It is frustrating.

I get it, but if a guy was this close to being paid, why not just finish? Literally the only thing keeping him from getting paid is an $11 washer.

How else are they gonna make you sweat??? The nervousness helps keep the heart-rate & blood-presure up, so in theory, you can burn more calories... continuously. Sorta like "bonus" exercise... :D .
Anyways, looking good. Gonna be livin' large when you get that full-perimeter mezzanine in the shop done. "Bonus" room galore. :D . I sure do like that. :) .

I am curious though... I didn't see any roof-venting, esp w/a black roof. Insulation or no, w/o venting, heat will be hard to control, esp in summer. So what'd you end up with - or will end up with. Gotta be something good... :D .

So, the front third is all spray foamed (the house) it will basically have a 10" envelope. 2" of closed cell against the metal and 8" of open cell on top of that. That will envelope the entire house and even on the shop side. It will pull in mama's garage, the fabrication shop, the mechanical room and the mezzanine office and upholstery shop. That will all be heated and cooled.
The other 2/3rds has a rolled, vinyl back insulation with a foil barrier. It's ok, but nothing exciting. On the north end of the shop I am putting 2 of these in the end where I will be doing most of my body work and sanding etc. These will be on a thermostat, plus a wall switch.

Eventually, I want to sheet the ceiling portion across the gables and spray blow in insulation on top. Not sure if it is worth the extra effort and cost, but it is in my plans.

Thanks, was just curious. When I redid my garage, I used a lot(might be considered "excessive" by code, but I wanted airflow...) of roof venting in the soffits, vent-chutes over the wall-edge-tops in every place possible twixt every rafter & sealed around those w/expanding foam. Used a flat-continuous-roll-venting along the entire length of the roof-ridge. & blown insulation to ~ R60+ over the ceiling. Even just the roof-venting got me considerable summer-temp drops. Was surprised at the amount. I also used a very dark green for the roof shingles, to match the house, which also got serious roof-venting & insulation, also good summer temp drops. Turned out well. I also put in a big vent in the ceiling exiting thru the gable wall, but only used it a couple times to remove welding smoke - worked fine.

The foam will really quiet-down the tin from "talking". Will also help keep in/out the heat during the seasons. I think you'll be happy. :) . It may help to put in one of the Big-Azz-Fans(or equivalent) in the shop ceiling for decent air-movement. For the length of the shop, maybe 2? Can always add the 2nd one if needed later anyways. Just before I retired, the company put in a series of those fans in the bus shop, & they really did make summer-life more bearable, in terms of perceived summer temps on the skin & body.

That is very nice, sounds like the shop is about 50x70, and you still get another garage for your wife. Nice setup.

Now I'm feeling small, I need electricity before I can do too much more. Still waiting for a quote and you got yours in, in less time...o_O

As a 20 plus year contractor I see it everyday. Poor time management, work slow, show up late & leave early & still charge high rates. New construction is the worst. I don't get it...Maybe they just need time to get stoned or drunk.

I rent a yard within several yards of cement contractors. Mostly foundations. I have never seen anything like it when they come back to the yard after they're done with work...they down a 6 pack in 15 minutes. Not only have I seen nothing like it, my family owned a liquor store when I was a kid and I worked for them for 15 years.:( Almost as if the 2 of them are immune to beer, then they drive home 30 miles.o_O

Luckily, I am not in a hurry to hook up power. It needs to be done, but we are still a ways out. I just act as my own GC, so my whole job is coordinating and keeping people moving forward. If I don't stay on them, it will get down to crunch time and a $12 washer will be creating a work stoppage.

Remember when that $12 washer was only 12 cents? The good old days.

Well, good news at LeGrangeville. The contractor showed up with the $12 washer and finally closed that portion out. Now, I can call and have the power company come out and set the meter.

The steel building guys showed up and finished the building minus the small garage door that is waiting on framing. Gutters are done and trim is finished. They actually cleaned up after themselves.

Probably won’t have a lot of updates for a bit. Waiting on the web trusses to be built and then the framers can start.

Might be wanting some sod or grass around there before the wet winter gets there since they are through with the heavy construction. Momma ain't gonna like you tracking mud into her new house, LOL!

It's on the list. I have to get the sptic put in first. I am bringing in 3 tractors next weeked to knock out the final grade for everything except where the septic tanks goes.
