I might be going this route in the future, I was thinking of one rectangular building....smaller living (1,000 - 1,200 sq ft), large shop and 3 car wide but deep garage (possible paint booth in the back). Each with a wall separating it, so 3 separate rooms with 2 dividing walls and a mezzanine over the living area for parts storage (single story living). The mud/utility/bathroom with a door to the shop. Hopefully my last residence. This thread gives me hope and fills me with dread at the same time.
It's a huge undertaking, but it will be worth it. Finding the right piece of property that will allow it is the hardest part. Barndominums, as they are commonly called nowadays, are becoming more acceptable by cities and zoning. I have planned for this going on 30 years, long before they were trendy and chic. I have drawn the floor plan 100 times, trying to maximize my usable square footage. We will see if I am successful. The living quarters would have been much smaller, had I been single. I could get buy with 600-800 sf, but alas, Mama has to have extra bedrooms to decorate, that will sit empty.
I've just been planning for maybe 2-3 years as I wasn't sure if I was going to leave (I'm a tad older then you, I think). Unless we (2 of us) find the perfect spot the Shop n Sleep, Shouse, Shop with a little extra, Compounded, Shop squared.......will be it.
My kids have always joked about "The Compound". Anytime they dated anyone they would ask what skill set they bring to the compound. It was tongue in cheek, but actually my daughter bought the 5 acres next door to ours, so we have 10 acres that will be fenced. We are semi-preppers, meaning we are striving to be self sufficient for the most part. We aren't getting off the grid or anything like that, but we will have a big root cellar and a community raised bed garden area. When COVID hit, nothing changed for us, other than products getting hard to get. My wife keeps can rotators in the pantry. We keep about 6 months worth of food we normally eat anyway. My daughter has been really intrigued with making goats milk soaps and canning. It's funny that the things my grandparents did, are coming full circle. I'll cover all of this in the coming months. She just got engaged this weekend and they are planning a wedding for October, so my plate is pretty full.
Been a while since I checked in Chris. Your place is coming right along! I will have to come check it out in person sometime.
Anytime Jeff. It would be a haul for you. I mapped it. It's roughly 65 miles from your house. They are supposed to be delivering wood on Wednesday for the framing. I am hoping they will be well underway by next week.
Oh just wait......once it's framed up it will be easier to relate. I should have approx. 1500 sf upstairs for storage.
Meeting the framers in the morning. These guys amaze me at how fast they are. I am guessing they will be puttin on the second floor by tomorrow evening.
Oh man, you got it made!!!! Stand in the same spot every day and take a picture ( inside and out. ) then print em out and make a flip book!!!!
Yeah, that was while I was waiting in the electrician to finish. The power company wouldn’t finish until he fixed something. Reference the $12 washer. Or are you talking about my temp power? Thats for the framers.
Dang Chris, I've missed this whole thing, but got all caught up today between patients. I knew the prepping for retirement, but missed it included new digs. Fantastic! Tickled pink for you. Looking great. If we had to start over, no question we'd be doing the same thing. It would be nice to have everything in one spot instead of spread all over the yard between a shop, a garage, shed and lean to's.
In typical fashion, my contractors called and said they wouldn't be able to start until tomorrow......ugh. Of course that was 10 minutes before they were supposed to meet me on site.
LOL! I can neither confirm nor deny....he may also be sanding on model car parts or supergluing his fingers together....if that were such a thing. LOL Sounds like your framers are related to my painters. LOL
Yes i was asking about the temp outlets out of elect panel. I have done that, i was a electrician before i retired.
No when i retired i quit working for any body. Also i am 89 years old and have a hard climbing ladders.
Your still young!!! I understand the whole ladder deal though.....Go back to Jan15 and check this out. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/roothawg.1308818/
It's 18' to the trusses, but I have a 16" web truss for the floor. Downstairs will be roughly 9' ceiling, upstairs will be a little shorter, maybe 7'6".
