Can someone please advise the recommended dwell angle for a flathead Ford V8 converted to Bubba's GM distributor?
Can I go for 30 degrees?

Why don't you ask Bubba? He would know better than anyone. He even answers his PMs.

It's a Chevy distributor. Dosen't matter what engine it is in. 30 degres dwell is correct.

Thanks, I'm off to my garage

  5. Chevy has used anywhere from 26 to 35 degrees over the years for V8 dist. I would ask Jim (GMCBubba) what he sets up his distributors to be optimum at.
The reality with dwell is there is no perfect dwell since what works at idle and no load is completely different than what is optimum at high RPM and High loads. That is why PerTronix now makes a module that has adaptive dwell where it is changing in real time as the car is running for the closest to optimal dwell at all times.

Chevy, and the rest of GM V8 cars using the single-point window distributor since the early 60's have used either 28-34 or just plain 30 degrees dwell up until '73 ( according to several Motors and various tune up books/manuals I have) when points became obsolete. That's the dwell I and every one else I know who did tune ups in the early 60's/70's used on GM cars/trucks. The distributor that is converted for late flatheads is usually the latest SBC version. Since the timing is directly affected by dwell, you want to be accurate and consistant when setting dwell. I'll stick with 30 degrees as the best GM dwell.

The 26-35 dwell spec could have been used in the 50's on some of the 1st generation V8 Delco distributors. Nominal is STILL VERY CLOSE TO 30!
