I recently had a deceptive transaction with E Bay and Speedway Motors. I was looking to buy a bracket for my flathead and Speedway Motors had one for $37.99.
I looked at several more brackets that they show on the bottom of the page and returned to the Speedway bracket page with the big Speedway logo and the picture of the bracket. The ad also said free shipping and free returns.
I ordered the bracket with pay pal ad immediately got a confirmation from E Bay that my Speedway bracket order was confirmed at a price of $76.41.
I called Speedway and wanted to know why they charged me more and they said they only charged me
$37.99 plus shipping. The woman on the line was pretty obnoxious and kept talking over me, not allowing me to make my point about being overcharged.
I then noticed that the seller was some auto parts store from New York.
Somehow this auto part store used a Speedway ad on E Bay, doubled the price and then place my order with Speedway and pocketed around $37.00 for themselves.
I told Speedway that I was returning the bracket for a refund and noted the free returns. She told me I had to pay return shipping, and I would only get a refund on the $37.99 that they charged me.
I called E Bay and after explaining what happened, they said I would get a full refund and not have to pay for return shipping.
Speedway Motors was totally worthless in helping with the problem.

when you are shopping on ebay, you really have to pay attention to who the seller is. In the listing for the item you bought, was the seller listed as Speedway Motors, or someone else?

If it was someone else, then I can totally understand why calling Speedway would result in them getting pissed off....because they're not the ones who ripped you off.

Speedway's listing does not state free shipping-- it's $10.99 as shown on my end. The one in New York for $76.xx, which uses the stock Speedway Motors image of the bracket, does offer free shipping.

It sounds like you clicked on the "wrong" listing, thinking it was the official Speedway Motors eBay account.

You should be able to get a screen grab of the original listing page to prove this company used the SM logo, etc. as once sold, the listing you purchased the item from cannot change. They may be legitimately selling a Speedway Motors part, so nothing wrong with that if so.

Sorry, but it sounds like you clicked on the wrong listing, instead of being "scammed". The place in NY you bought it from offers free returns...

Sounds like Speedway had nothing to do with you getting ripped off. Why would they refund you for money they didn't receive? You paid someone else not speedway I am amazed they offered to give you anything.

The problem is that speedway said that I placed the order with them
and they charged me for the bracket.
Why did Speedway send the part if they had nothing to do with the transaction.
The seller should have sent the part, not Speedway.
E Bay said it was against their rules to sell items that you don't have in your possession on the their site and they are returning my money.

Yes they can legitimately sell Speedway parts that they possess but in this case, the seller took my money and then somehow ordered the part from Speedway in my name at the Speedway price and Speedway sent it to me as if I ordered it from them.
This is in violation of E Bay rules and is why E Bay is refunding my money.

Free shipping & returns should have been a red flag.

This is easy to figure out. The seller in NY placed the order with speedway using your information. Had speedway refunded the order it would have gone back to the seller in NY that paid Speedway for the part with their credit card. Most companies have drop shipping set up from their suppliers. They probably don't have that, as they probably aren't an authorized Speedway reseller. I would be curious if you called speedway back and asked what credit card they show was used for the order. A less than scrupulous person might try to order more parts from speedway with the card number if that's what they did.

They only owed you the price of the part you returned. Just cause you used an expensive middle man is not their fault.

I've dealt with Speedway for years. There have been a few glitches but their customer service has always done what it takes to leave me satisfied. As far as I'm concerned Speedway is a stand up outfit and I don't see how they can be blamed for anything in this instance.

What is the eBay seller name that you purchased your part from?

I don't think it was Speedway's fault. I had a similar, ALMOST, transaction when I was looking for tires for the wife's car. I looked up the size and got an add from a known dealer for great tires at an even better price. I had just about had all my info on the order when I realized the order wasn't from the known dealer at all. It was from some place in Virginia and the price was WAY higher then the ad stated. I got lucky, seeing the difference before putting in my credit card number. I like to call the companies, I do NOT trust using the internet.

  15. Drop shipping. It happens all over the world, especially on Ebay. The seller operates from 1 computer in his lounge room, and does not have a single thing actually in stock.

According to Speedway, I purchased the bracket and I paid for it. Apparently the part house or whatever they are ordered the bracket from Speedway using my information and paid for it and kept the profit acting as me.

Speedway should have been upset that someone is taking their E Bay ads and altering them to scam people.

I never asked Speedway what credit card was used for the transaction but they insisted that I ordered the part and not someone else.

So the seller has figured a way to scam both you and Speedway. Sounds crooked, so stay away from them. Lucky that EBay helped you.

You ""Thoroughly"" have to read the ad it's best to use desktop version to see all the details, some words/contradicting tricky and how they are wrote,,
I have seen good deals on price Then See $100 to 1k on shipping on items as low as $20. I also Pay attention to what state and where it's coming from, Like
Ny Ny & few other On west coast , & many Items sold from China ...
    There's many scams

((""""& there Is ""ONE SPECIFIC "" Here SELLER on HAMB Classified that are misleading in their ads , Never
post /Contribute to threads On HAMB , but they sure sell their Race Car , so call Vintage parts, here Out of California many adds """

On eBay as in the item being sold there is a lot of copy and pasting going on , one off the top of my head is OBD -1 connector,
Snap On sells it for roughly $60 there's many people sellers selling it for as low as $20 but the problem is you HAVE to know what you're looking at the ones on eBay and Amazon "do not" have the external 12v power supply on the side OBD 1 plug
((many have been purchased though) ,, the ones being sold will not work ,
it will not power up Snap On brick ,

Not sure why people use EBay to buy new readily available stuff when they can just pick up the phone and call Speedway and order it.

Like someone said above drop ship, happens all the time. I'd be surprised if Ebay doesn't allow it. There is a page before you commit to buying an item with a total charge isn't there?

I’ve been buying from bedroom certified sellers for years if the are affiliated with the manufacturer I need to buy from but they don’t sell direct. Best Gaskets and CP pistons are 2 of them. I’m close enough to use will call.

Welcome to buying something that was drop shipped. It happens all the times and JC Whitney was famous for it. You order it off Ebay, the seller places an order With Speedway and has it shipped to you. You feel you got screwed over because you frigging didn't price shop the part and the guy got over on you. It's not Speedway 's fault and they didn't screw you over they just sold that guy a part and shipped it to you.

My daughter has worked in the Costco Call center for 20 or so year and is a manager and deals with that daily. Someone orders something from an Ebay or other online vendor and that seller has Costco drop ship it. The buyer is screwed if anything goes wrong because they were not the person who purchased it from Costco.

20 something years ago I ordered a pair of Chrome tight tuck big block Chevy headers from JC Whitney for 250 bucks and the add said "shipped from manufacture" A few later a box showed up from Immerso enterprises with an absolutely beautiful show quality set of headers in it. Worthy of going on a show car headed straight to GNRS.

  30. If the eBay listing says "returns are accepted" you should do it through the eBay system. You don't call Speedway or a reseller and butt heads with anybody. Following eBay's steps, you get a return shipping label and eBay takes back the money from the account of whoever got it and eBay puts it back in your account. It might take a few weeks before you see the money show up, though.
But thanks for sharing and reminding us to be careful. I've noticed that the cheaper the eBay listing price compared to others, the more care you have to take to read all the fine print.
