Well I had an unexpected GREAT turn of events come my way this week and looks like I have bought a complete car less motor. That's all I'm saying right now but when the BLESSED event happens I will post pictures here and everywhere on the HAMB :D The car may be a little long but I've told myself I am finished tinkering with the rules since a couple of racers have started builds and I think I can get in under the 150" requirement. The C/GD seems to be just the class to be a decision maker for some who have wanted to build FED and if a group would like to do a class of thier own (that fits the period) at Eagle Field let me know. I can't wait to finalize the deal on this car and show it off to my HAMB brothers and sisters! Rocky

Can't wait to see the build thread on your car Tim! Rocky

  3. I hope to have something good to show soon, right now I have a lot of pieces and a pile of tubing. The progress is slow but speeding up, I'm hoping for a May finish date. :D

    Sleeving the block for a 4" bore and 3.2" stroke 322ci Y-Block. ;)

  4. Hey Tim,
Let me say I am a dyed-in-the-wool Chevy man but this is the coolest thing I have seen. When I was a kid my family had two Y-blocks, a short-bed half ton with an electric overdrive 3-speed and my older brother acquired a station wagon with a 312 that was said to be an interceptor. I just remember the destinctive sound of those engines. I wish you God speed with this project and look forward to shaking your hand at Eagle Field. Roy

  5. Thanks, I hope to have ready by then. I WILL have it ready! :D I was going to run this engine but it was too big so I'm making a 322ci, but give it a listen if you like the Y sound. ;)

man we need a deal like that here in my area, looks like fun fun fun ,

  7. Yeah I was wondering why you didn't just use a 312. Thought you were really taking this seriously pushing right to the cubic inch limit but I remember overhearing you at the last Eagle Field event (at least I think it was you). You were talking about the lack of Y-block performance parts and how you have to graft parts from more popular engines. Anyway my hat is off to you for keeping the old school stuff alive.

  8. I want a big bore and a short stroke with a long rod, gonna rev the s#!t out of it. :D If you listen to this one you will know what I'm talking about. A Y is a great motor but I like to think that the mods I do make them a little better than the run of the mill Mill. ;)

  13. "must extend past the motor plate upright by 2 or 3 inches.(see attached shot)"
Don , Do you mean past the motor plate at least three inches and then the down sizing splice with rosebuds etc? Did i understand that right? Is that done both top and bottom?
Is the down sizing necessary or can the chassis be full length 1 1/4 bottom rail, 1 3/8 top rail and 1 5/8 five point cage?

    Don:
The rails can be any size you want from 3" past the motor plate forward SFI has no specs. on the front rails. The down sizing is done to get from the recominded 1-1/2" X .058" top sholder hoop down to 1-3/8" then 1-1/4" all .058" as that size slides in with no problems. I dont down siz the tube with a rosebud torch I use the next size smaller tube to sleve down two sizes. I like a top rail of 1-1/4" X .058" and a bottom rail of 1-1/8" X.058" it just seems to work and live as well. When I read rosebuds I thought of a torch. I think you meant rosette welds. Yes a rosette weld is good and the tubes should be cut on an angle and welded then the heat effected zone is not consentrated like a butt weld. This helps spread the stress in a larger area and is less prone to cracking.

    P.S.
Google SFI and send for the chassis specs for the ET you wish to run.

The stepdown is optional and if you look at the pix of Brian Fox's King Chassis cars thgey are the same size all the way to the torsion bar. With a stepdown the rosette welds are not mandatory as the security of the junction is obvius by the weld at the step. With internal reinforcing sleeves at a tube join the rosettes are mandatory as there is no way to check that the weld at the tube junction penetrated the sleeve.
If you do use a step down the 3" is the amount that the inner tube need to fit up inside. If making the join in the motor plate area (say from 1.375 to 1.25) the end of the larger tube needs to be at least 3" ahead of the motor plate--in other words out of the cockpit area.

  17. Tim, your dragster is looking great. I'm anxious to see details of the trans and rear axle. I think I can see why you haven't posted much lately; you've been busy!

  19. Well Rocky, you've got me excited. :D Can't wait to see.

  20. Thanks both of you. I understand what you mean. beyond the motorplate NOT at it. Yes I meant rossette. I always do that on a splice usually 4 on each. two and two at right angles. I hadnt thought much about a tube size drop beyond the cage till you mentioned this. I have the IHRA and NHRA books always right in my welder or nearby. I havent built a long or longer car before . 104 was my longest. This willl be over 130.

My wife Tamara wants to drive it and insists on a foot brake. This car had more gauges than the Big Rig I used to drive:D I'm not sure about the chassis...........I may sell the chassis and body and use the parts to build my own..............I dunno:confused:

  30. I obviousy don't have a trained eye 'cause the frame looked pretty good to me, sort of a diamond in the rough.
