  2. Nice front end! Is it chrome or Jet Hot? I want to chrome mine but was told it wouldn't pass tech although I see so many that are.

Instead of twisting the arm I've fitted it to be welded level. Thanks for the input your knowledge is always welcomed. Rocky

Polished Raw 4130 Chrome Moly, the whole front end****embly, tubes and arms. After all the welding was done, I wire wheeled all the welds. Using a medium and fine Scotch Brite wheel, I polished it all. The arms were grained on a belt sander with 220 grit belt and then polished on the Scotch Brite wheels. While watching Nascar races, I blended any spots with a grey Scotch Brite pad and then a white pad. Last but not least, Semi Chrome Polish.

  6. That sounds like a good idea! I can do it myself and not have anyone jump me about hydrogen embrittlement. :D Anything on it to maintain the shine? Or do you just keep up the work?

I'll do it Ron. We hooked one up to Joe's "ARMY" record player and man it sounded GOOOOOOOOOD!

Right now I just keep them clean and use the Grey Scotch Brite Fine Pad and Semi Chrome. I have considered on having them Clear Powder Coated.

You are now in the "10,000 5 minute Job Zone"= 833.3 hours = 34.83 days at 24 hours a day. No sleeping allowed, so get to work, stopping only for peeing, pooping and eating !

Been there, done that. I ended up plumbing the second fire bottle on my NT/F car in the pits at the March Meet--along with welding in mounts for the ballast, finding 5/16" lash caps (thanks Butch Blair). That was before we attempted to start it and then had to find a replacement blower belt idler bracket (Butch to the rescue again, along with the Litle Nate gang who provided the majority of the spacers that I needed).
All of this was after working on the car full time for three weeks prior to leaving for the coast and working 18 hours a day once I got there.
Of course when it first lit on alky on Friday night it was all worth it--and even better the next morning on 86%.

Great thread guys... love lookin at the pics! I've wanted to build a FED for years to play around with at the local poedunk strip. Just brackets, nothing big. Place is a real throwback... damn near Amish.

I'm a really big guy... like NFL/WWE big... 6'6" 325# (tho aiming for 275#)... obviously my size is a major consideration in a build like this. I always figured the drivers' legs went up along the trans, but it looks like they're more in a chair-type position, correct? I haven't ever seen a FED in person, so I have a TON of questions like this.

Anyway, it looks like you guys are on the verge of having an absolute ball... have fun with it, and be safe!

ps... in the original pics of your car Rocky, it looks like something fell on the chassis to bow it like that... weird!

  21. Just read this whole thread. Thanks for the ideas guys.

  22. It's not all about Eagle Field, today I finished the engine for the Yellow Brick. May 14 we break the E/PP record at El Mirage the the next week FED time at Eagle Field. :D

Keith you did a mighty fine job on Dan and your N/TF. I must have checked the same things 5 or 10 times before we fired up my car for the first time. There is alittle Dr. Frankenstein in all of us.

  27. I keep looking at your Y block and thinking we need a early 318 motor in a nostalgia rail somewhere too.
Enjoying your progress. All the best.

Well after a great event at Eagle Field and catching up at work and home I got after the Dragster build this weekend. Started out Sat. with a friend coming by and straighting out the shop then I started with remounting the steering column.

A little hesitant to weld in the x-member for the anti-rotation bracket I did some practicing and went for it.

I was about to start cutting on the cage when I decided to "Sleep on it". The car will not see a 1/4 mile track let alone an NHRA track as long as I own it, only racing it at Eagle Field and don't plan on doing any updates so I'm really considering going back to a 3 pt like similar to the one the car was built with.

With this done I can put the original interior back in.
I like the car but to make it NHRA Legal will require basically a new chassis. Eagle Field is only 1/8 mile and the car might do 100 MPH so I'll run this car until I can build or buy a "Legal" chassis and maybe use the parts off this car and hang the chassis in the rafters until someone comes along looking for a Bergler Bodied Logghe chassis.
